Teacher of the Visually Impaired

TX-STAR Speech Language Services partners with school districts throughout Texas to provide specialized educational support for students with a wide range of learning and accessibility needs. We are currently seeking Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments for school-based opportunities in the Houston area.

These positions are ideal for educators who are passionate about improving access, promoting independence, and helping students with visual impairments participate fully in meaningful classroom experiences.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments, you will provide individualized instruction, consultation, and accessibility support based on each student’s visual functioning and educational needs.

In this role, you will:

• Conduct assessments to identify students’ visual functioning, academic strengths, and areas requiring additional support

• Provide direct and consultative instruction tailored to students with visual impairments

• Adapt lessons, assignments, and instructional materials into accessible formats such as Braille and large print

• Incorporate assistive technology, tactile resources, and other specialized learning tools

• Implement instructional goals, services, and accommodations outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs

• Collaborate with classroom teachers, related-service providers, campus staff, and multidisciplinary teams

• Consult with families and school personnel regarding accessibility strategies, student progress, and educational needs

• Help students develop independent learning, self-advocacy, and functional skills

• Monitor student performance and adjust instructional supports based on progress

• Maintain accurate assessment reports, service records, progress updates, and required compliance documentation

Qualifications for This Position

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

• Current and valid Texas teaching certification

• Texas certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments

• Knowledge of assessment tools and procedures used to evaluate visual functioning

• Familiarity with accessible instructional materials, assistive technology, and specialized teaching strategies

• Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

• Ability to support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with families and school-based teams
