Class A CDL Local Driver

Company Overview Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. seeks a reliable Local P&D or City Driver to deliver and receive freight safely and on time while supporting the company’s promise of excellent service and a family‑oriented culture. Job Summary The driver operates tractor‑trailer combinations between service centers and customer sites, handling, loading, unloading, and securing freight while complying with DOT regulations and safety standards. Primary Responsibilities Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations that govern safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials. Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass a drug test and alcohol test. Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines. Use various loading techniques, such as loading tight or cross loading. Transport freight continuously throughout the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces. Utilize Dock Yard Management System to consistently monitor freight shipment locations throughout the service center. Read and interpret shipping labels. Complete freight movement forms such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, and exception forms. Hand load, rewrap or stack freight as necessary; secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, or other supplies. Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment. Be available for work to meet customer pick‑up and delivery schedules. Job Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent (preferred). Must read, write, speak English and perform simple mathematical calculations. Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements. Acceptable motor vehicle record; 12 months previous tractor‑trailer driving experience or completion of a state‑certified driving school or OD’s Truck Driver Training program. Ability to operate handheld tablets, communicate orally, and follow instructions via two‑way radio or phone. Knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems, DOT regulations, and hazardous material transportation. Meet or exceed medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation; pass drug and alcohol tests. Complete orientation/training program instructions by a qualified OD driver trainer. Minimum age 22 years. Physical Demands Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, push, pull, lift, and reach freight up to 500 pounds. Must perform frequent squatting, crouching, and carrying freight between 1 and 100 pounds over up to 100 feet. Must lift and unload full trailers weighing up to 50,000 pounds. Must install and remove tire chains, use pallet jack, hand truck, steering wheel, and other equipment. Must maintain alertness while driving for up to 11 hours and perform pre‑trip inspections. Work Environment Employees will be exposed to weather, noise, lighting, and other conditions while loading/unloading freight, driving, and working in enclosed vehicles.
