Overview The Occupational Therapist is responsible for evaluating patients within 24 hours of referral, developing and implementing treatment plans, providing direct patient care, training staff, supervising assistants, and ensuring compliance with state practice act and payer requirements. Responsibilities Evaluate patients within twenty‑four (24) hours, or one business day of physician referral, and document causes for any delay in the medical record. Develop effective treatment plans and obtain approval for services from the referring physician. Treat patients according to the physician treatment plan. Assist the nursing department with training of restorative aides. Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), aides, and students in direct patient care and related activities, following state practice act. Communicate with the supervisor and other health team members regarding patient progress, problems, and plans. Participate in patient care conferences, utilization review meetings, and rehabilitation conferences as needed. Participate in an in‑service training program for other staff in the facility. Record evaluations, daily treatment notes, weekly progress notes, recertification documentation, and treatment changes per Occupational Therapy Board state practice act and third‑party payer requirements. Instruct patient families or nursing staff in maintenance programs and caregiver training for discharge preparation. Participate in discharge planning and recommend necessary durable medical equipment to facilitate patient independence (e.g., braces, walkers, canes, elevated toilet seats, grab bars). Report equipment problems to maintain them in good working order. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy (prefer Master’s or Doctorate). Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the state. Computer skills: Inputting data into programs such as Casamba and Point Click Care. Language skills: Ability to read and comprehend technical procedures and policy manuals; present information clearly to managers, coworkers, and families. Mathematical skills: Apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning skills: Solve practical problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Compliance: Maintain continuing education and a license in good standing with the state board at all times. Licensure & Certification Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the state and must meet continuing education requirements as per state practice act. Physical Demands Standing and walking frequently; sitting occasionally. Reaching, pushing, pulling, and moving objects frequently. Talking and hearing frequently. Occasional exertion of >100 pounds of force; frequent exertion of >50 pounds; constant exertion of 20 pounds to move objects. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Visual acuity: Close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception; ability to adjust focus.
