Paramedic Position Overview The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel provide non‑emergency patient transfers, event medical stand‑by, and respond to emergency calls to deliver immediate care and transport to the critically sick and injured, as per training and authorization levels. Essential Job Functions Attend orientation, EMS operations, compliance, and emergency vehicle operations sessions; maintain EMS certification and complete required programs. Provide out‑of‑hospital care and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction. Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs. alone and 250 lbs. with assistance, up to 33 inches high, for a distance of 10 feet. Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers and common emergency scene sounds. Communicate verbally in person, via telephone, and telecom using English; meet vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle in the represented states. Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information via an approved state OEMS record system. Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills; perform necessary movements for quality patient care, including bending, stooping, crawling, and walking on uneven surfaces. Inspect EMS equipment; ensure supplies, verify operation, refuel and perform fluid checks; report necessary maintenance. Respond to callback or call‑in emergency situations. Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by supervisors and management. Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning at stations, training facilities, and ambulances; be self‑starter with little oversight and adapt to a team‑based management structure. Conduct event stand‑by operations at sporting events, community festivals, and other large gatherings. Respond to hazardous material incidents, uncommon situations, and perform emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events. Understand stress response and methods for personal well‑being; apply body substance isolation and HIPAA patient privacy requirements. Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel, including medical staff, social workers, morticians, examiners, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communications staff. Requirements General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation, and proper use of EMS equipment. Ability to learn through training using a variety of EMS methods. Rapid acquisition of knowledge of road/street systems and community layouts. Skills in airway opening and maintenance, patient ventilation, CPR, medication administration, defibrillation, and trauma care—hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and extremity/spine immobilization. Working Environment/Conditions EMS operations are 24/7, 365 days a year in all weather conditions; personnel must respond at a moment's notice and maintain viable field operations until resolved or relieved. EMS crew members must be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to handle a wide variety of patient types, behaviors, and situations; safety, professionalism, and compassion are essential traits. Special Requirements and Qualifications Must be 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of workforce evaluations and/or equivalent educational screening exam approved by Jan‑Care/GEMS. EVOs must maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving history as determined by our insurance company. Jan‑Care/GEMS is a drug‑free company; employees must pass initial and random drug screenings. The following background checks will be conducted prior to offering employment: OIG excluded individuals list. Criminal history check. Driving history. Child/elder abuse check. Reference check. The Office of EMS will deny certification to individuals convicted of certain crimes. Must maintain a valid phone number. Must maintain valid Health Care Provider level CPR certification. Must maintain valid certification of EMT‑P with the state OEMS office. Must maintain valid ACLS, PHTLS, PALS certifications. Proof of TB and hepatitis vaccinations.
