1st Class Structural Welder

Job Summary:
A 1st Class Structural Welder is responsible for fabricating, fitting, and welding structural steel components used in shipbuilding, ship repair, and marine construction. The welder performs high-quality welds on critical ship structures while adhering to shipyard specifications, military standards, safety regulations, and quality control requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform structural welding using SMAW (Stick), FCAW (Flux Core), GMAW (MIG), and other approved welding processes.
• Weld ship hulls, bulkheads, decks, foundations, frames, and other structural components.
• Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, drawings, and shipyard specifications.
• Prepare materials by cutting, grinding, fitting, and aligning components before welding.
• Inspect welds for quality and compliance with project requirements.
• Operate welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment safely and efficiently.
• Repair defective welds and structural components as required.
• Follow all shipyard safety procedures and OSHA regulations.
• Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
• Collaborate with fitters, supervisors, inspectors, and other trades to complete projects on schedule.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Successful completion of a shipyard welding test and certification.
• Ability to pass structural welding qualifications for FCAW and/or SMAW processes.
• Strong knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and fabrication practices.
• Ability to read blueprints and understand welding symbols.
• Knowledge of shipyard safety standards and procedures.

Preferred Experience

• 3–5+ years of structural welding experience in shipbuilding or ship repair.
• Experience working on commercial, military, or naval vessels.
• Familiarity with ABS, NAVSEA, Coast Guard, or other marine welding standards.
• Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel, and marine-grade materials.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.
• Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and enter confined spaces.
• Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, and work in physically demanding conditions.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, and various shifts as required.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in shipyards, dry docks, fabrication shops, and aboard vessels under construction or repair. Exposure to noise, fumes, weather conditions, and confined spaces is common.
