Industrial Hygienist Position within the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for conducting environmental health surveys, developing and implementing industrial hygiene programs, and supervising assigned personnel while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Responsibilities Design, conduct, and report on industrial hygiene surveys and studies to determine potential exposure risks. Develop programs and investigate complaints related to environmental problems such as heat stress, noise, vibration, fumes, toxic chemicals, lighting, ventilation, asbestos, and lead. Prepare technical reports, including data interpretation, and recommend corrective actions. Develop and evaluate sampling techniques and laboratory analysis procedures for unusual conditions. Review chemical, equipment, and product specifications for potential exposure and make recommendations. Review applicable regulations and determine their applicability and potential liability to the District. Train employees in sampling techniques and in applicable health and safety issues. Plan and coordinate projects, programs, and special assignments of Environmental Health Specialists. Participate in system development to identify, document, and correct industrial hygiene and occupational health hazards. Qualifications Extensive knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and environmental health and safety practices. Strong expertise in interpreting and applying complex local, state, and federal regulations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, presenting findings, and training staff. Leadership, supervisory, and mentorship skills with ability to guide and develop staff. Analytical approach to problem solving using current scientific literature and emerging concerns. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Professional diplomacy and ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Experience developing, evaluating, or improving industrial hygiene or environmental health programs. Adaptable to organizational policies, budgeting, contracting, and large public‑sector systems. Education Bachelor’s degree in public health, industrial hygiene, occupational or environmental health and safety, or a closely related field from a recognized college or university. Experience Five (5) years of experience identifying, evaluating, and controlling health hazards in workplaces, or developing, evaluating, and implementing occupational or environmental health standards. A master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience. Special Requirements Certified Industrial Hygienist (C.I.H.) certification required. Valid driver’s license and use of a motor vehicle in the State of California. Special Notes Requires wearing a negative‑pressure respirator. Employment subject to medical clearance and compliance with safety regulations regarding hazardous materials. Industrial Hygienist and Assistant Industrial Hygienist positions are on call at any hour. C.I.H. certification must remain valid for the duration of employment. Full‑time employees earn up to two weeks of paid vacation initially, increasing to three weeks after five years of service. Up to 13 paid holidays.
