Base Welder

Powell is a manufacturer of switchgear and other electrical equipment. We are currently hiring a Base Welder at our Southeast Houston manufacturing facility. Schedule: Monday‑Thursday 5:00 am‑3:30 pm; OT as needed. Purpose of Position A Fitter / Welder will work individually or as part of a small team to produce sheet‑metal weldments that meet dimensional specifications on mechanical engineering drawings. The role requires determining weld locations, performing cosmetic and appearance specifications, grinding welds, and sheet‑metal buffing. Key Responsibilities MIG welding mild steel MIG welding stainless steel Basic fitting Machine adjustment according to department manual(s) Material removal using grinding processes Reading drawings and inspecting parts for basic dimensions Performing basic layouts (positioning and alignment) Inspecting parts against complex engineered drawings Spray transfer MIG welding Examining weld bead for acceptable attributes Identifying types of copper, stainless grades, etc. Knowledge of flux core, shielded wire Cope and fit work Relationships Reporting to department supervisor Internal: interactions with machine operators, welders, painters, material handlers, leadpersons, supervisors External: none Job Requirements 1–2 years of relevant work experience Basic command of English (written and verbal) Ability to execute hot work (outside the department) Finish grinding and surface finishing based on departmental requirements Repair improper welds Knowledge of fixtures required for area of responsibility Tack welding Stud welding Fine‑tune voltage Square parts Torch cut Arc metal gouge Basic product knowledge related to departmental needs Knowledge of AWS chart/steel tables Knowledge of welding symbols Use of basic tools (tape measure, squares, clamps, fillet gauge, angle finder, etc.) Convert decimals to fractions and use conversion charts Effective communication with co‑workers Team collaboration Awareness and adherence to Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out procedures Follow company operating procedures, safety rules, and ISO requirements Working Environment All work is performed in a shop environment with constant exposure to shop elements.
