About the Position

Job Title: Nurse Manager, Emergency Department Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Department Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evening Hours per Shift: 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM Experience: Minimum of five (5) years nursing experience in a management and/or supervisory role in the Emergency Department License: Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS Must-Have: Master’s degree in nursing; EPIC experience Description: The Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. The role includes oversight and direction for the emergency department and accountability for planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within the department. Fostering an environment of collaboration and respect with all other healthcare team members is essential. Weekend and holiday coverage may be required as part of the role. Key responsibilities include the development of long-term unit staffing schedules and ensuring adequate daily coverage in line with established staffing needs. The Nurse Manager will develop measures and monitor unit operational performance metrics, which include agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates. Oversight of daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of employees within the department is critical. The position is also responsible for ongoing quality and performance improvement processes. A collaborative team approach is promoted in providing care for all patients. Effective communication and respectful interactions with others are essential. The Nurse Manager supports and interprets policies, procedures, and objectives. Monitoring customer satisfaction scores and implementing plans for improvement are also part of the responsibilities. Patient volume, quality of care, and performance monitoring will help identify areas for improvement. The Nurse Manager will maintain a departmental dashboard that tracks progress on staffing, service quality, and leadership. Investigating patient, physician, and staff complaints/concerns and resolving these issues is required. Maintaining required competencies for self and all employees is essential. Participation in a professional organization is encouraged. Collaborating with nursing leadership to establish care standards and evaluate staff compliance is part of the role. Protocols affecting the patient population will be identified and communicated to nursing staff. Maintaining a safe and caring environment conducive to positive health outcomes is crucial. Ensuring equal access to treatment for all individuals is a priority. Participation in the overall planning process for the service is expected. Monthly meetings with staff will address various topics, including goals, objectives, performance metrics, and staff concerns. The Nurse Manager will educate and evaluate staff, while also working with leadership to address disciplinary matters as needed. Staff education on new and existing procedures is important to ensure compliance. Creating an atmosphere of respect and courtesy towards patients, staff, and colleagues is paramount.
