CARDIAC ANESTHESIOLOGIST - ANESTHESIOLOGY %26 PAIN MANAGEMENT

Job Summary

Cardiac Anesthesiologist will provide the full range of anesthesia care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery and minimally invasive cardiac structural cases in the catheterization laboratory or as needed. The role also includes anesthesia for non‑cardiac surgeries and procedures, resident education, and quality assurance projects within the Anesthesiology service.

Typical Duties

• Provide complete range of anesthesia care to all cardiac patients when needed, including pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative anesthesia administration and monitoring, and post‑anesthetic care in compliance with The Joint Commission standards.
• Administer anesthesia for cardiac, thoracic, and minimally invasive cardiac cath‑lab cases.
• Provide transesophageal echo imaging and interpretation during cardiac cases.
• Provide cardiac and general anesthesia care throughout the Cook County Health hospitals in all functional areas, meeting compliance standards.
• Work independently, train residents, and provide medical direction to CRNA.
• Examine patients, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk.
• Coordinate work during procedures with nurses, residents, CRNAs, medical technicians, and health‑care providers.
• Administer anesthetics using local, regional, general, and monitored anesthesia care methods.
• Coordinate anesthesia administration with surgeons during procedures.
• Provide and maintain life support and airway management as needed and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.
• Determine when patients are ready for ICU admission or discharge home after surgery.
• Work daily hours, take 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and cardiac calls as operating needs require.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited medical college or university; licensed as a physician and surgeon in Illinois.
• Successfully completed Anesthesiology residency.
• Board certification or eligibility in anesthesiology (AMA) and must obtain certification within two years of employment.
• Cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services at start of employment.
• Advanced peri‑operative transesophageal echocardiography certification through the National Board of Echocardiography.
• Cardiac and thoracic anesthesiology clinical experience.
• Active ACLS and BLS certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of experience in an academic program.
• Fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology.

• Thorough knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
• Strong working knowledge of anesthesiology and pain management; contribute to program planning and policy development.
• Proficiency in safe administration of blood and blood products.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to establish rapport with families.
• Strong decision‑making skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to work daily hours and take 1st through 5th and cardiac calls.
• Build relationships within the organization and represent Cook County Health with external agencies.

• Teach and mentor anesthesia clinical staff, residents, and interns.
• Handle simultaneous demands and meet deadlines.

Physical and Environmental Demands

The position requires adherence to all hospital safety requirements, including PPE, hand washing, sanitizing practices, and specific engineering and work‑practice controls. It is performed in a healthcare setting with expectations for safe practice.
