Actuarial Developer II/III

$137k - $200.75k

Standard Insurance Co

The next part of your journey is right around the corner — with The Standard.

A genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others is the foundation for everything we do. With a customer-first mindset and an intentional focus on building strong teams, we’ve been able to uphold our legacy of financial stability while investing in new, innovative technologies that support the needs of our customers. Our high-performance culture focused on operational excellence thrives thanks to remarkable people united by compassion and a customer-first commitment. Are you ready to make a difference? Job Summary The Actuarial Developer designs, builds, and operates the software that powers our actuarial work. In this role you will translate actuarial, financial, and business needs into reliable automated solutions, from design through deployment and will partner across the organization to put data and analysis in the hands of decision-makers. This is a role for someone who wants to push the envelope on AI: we are actively building AI into how we work, and we’re looking to add someone to our team that will be a strong, hands-on adopter that will help the team get more out of the tools & technology we have available. Key Responsibilities: Develop Automated Business Solutions -

Design, develop, and deploy analysis software for use by actuarial teams, primarily on Databricks, with SQL and other languages as needed. Work across the full software development lifecycle — analysis, design, construction, implementation, and testing — and produce solution design specifications others can build from. Integrate with third-party systems such as GGY AXIS, Economic Scenario Generation (ESG) software, and risk modeling systems. Cloud-based computing tools and environments may be used. Financial and Actuarial Analysis -

Build and support the software behind actuarial and financial analysis — including principles-based modeling, financial forecasting, capital market pricing, and numerical methods used in pricing, valuation, financial reporting, or risk management. Your understanding of these concepts will allow you to translate them into reliable, well-engineered solutions and to collaborate effectively with the actuaries who own the models. Cross Collaboration -

Partner effectively with both business and technical colleagues to turn business needs into sound, well-engineered solutions. On the business side, work closely with actuaries, finance, product, and other end users to understand financial and product data and the decisions it supports. On the technical side, collaborate with IT, data, architecture, and fellow developers to align on standards, integration, and delivery. Communicate clearly across both audiences, and present data and analysis that provides guidance and influences decision-making. Lead with AI -

We are all-in on AI, and we want someone who is too. Make heavy, everyday use of AI and generative-AI tools (such as coding assistants and large language models) a default part of how you work — for development, analysis, testing, and documentation — and continually look for new ways to apply them and raise the bar for the team. You remain fully accountable for the accuracy, quality, and compliance of everything you deliver: treat AI output as a strong first draft, review and validate it to the same standard as your own work and follow all data-handling and governance policies. Training and Knowledge Transfer -

Research new techniques, tools, and practices and share them with a broader audience. Actively train and support others in analysis tools and methods — including effective use of AI. Operate Business Solutions -

Strengthen solutions through active ownership and use of automated processes. Refine solutions until they are ready for deployment to business users and support them in production. Note: This role may be filled at either of the levels noted below based on experience & qualifications. Actuarial Developer II: 5+ years of experience developing analytical or business software solutions. Demonstrated proficiency with Databricks and SQL. Able to independently deliver well-defined projects and contribute to technical design activities. Demonstrates curiosity and willingness to leverage AI-enabled development tools to improve productivity, analysis, and solution delivery. Actuarial Developer III: 6+ years of experience developing analytical or business software solutions. Demonstrated ability to lead technical design efforts and deliver complex cross-functional solutions. Highly proficient with Databricks and SQL. Serves as a technical mentor and trusted partner to business stakeholders. Champions adoption of AI-enabled development practices and modern engineering approaches; helps others effectively apply new tools and technologies to improve delivery outcomes. Skills and Background You'll Need: Education:

Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, computer science, business, or related field. Experience: Direct experience developing analytical applications and automated data solutions used in actuarial, financial, or business processes is required, including data pipelines, calculation engines, reporting solutions, model integration frameworks, and cloud-based analytical platforms An actuarial, insurance, risk management, or capital market finance background may be required. Experience producing technical designs, implementation specifications, and solution architecture documentation is preferred. Practical grounding in cost/benefit analysis for solutions is desired. Demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new technologies, including AI-enabled development tools, to improve efficiency, quality, and delivery outcomes. Familiarity with accounting under Statutory, U.S. GAAP, or Economic bases is a plus. Technical skills: Databricks SQL Software development lifecycle (SDLC) Source control (Git/Azure DevOps) Technical design and documentation Data integration and automation AI-enabled development practices and tooling Key Behaviors of a Successful Candidate: Driving Success:

Independently drives work forward and takes ownership of results. Approaches challenges from a broad perspective, anticipates and removes barriers, and pursues exceptional outcomes. Serves as a resource and mentor and continuously seeks better ways of working. Proactively identifies business issues and develops solutions to drive work forward and take us “next level”. Improvement Mindset:

Acts independently to research, identify, assess, and recommend methods and procedures on new assignments. Thinks innovatively, brings ideas to life, and proactively identifies and resolves business issues — designing certain solutions with limited input from leadership. Applies knowledge of actuarial business systems across the full development cycle and designs solutions that make complex business problems easier to analyze. Winning Together:

Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive internal and external relationships by consistently delivering value. Acts as a mentor and trainer to developers, actuaries, and other technical staff, and promotes newly identified design solutions and methods within the actuarial developer community. Seeks out and encourages diverse perspectives. Adaptability:

Serves as the lead on software development projects and can take ambiguous tasks and align them to the team's working model to ensure execution. Considers the optimal functioning of business automation as part of the design and resolves a wide range of complex issues in creative ways. #LI-DNI Why Join The Standard?
