IT Technician

Job Description

The IT Technician performs various functions, including the installation of commercial network and low voltage infrastructure wiring and equipment. The technician position commonly consists of the following obligations, tasks, duties, and responsibilities which they perform:

• Undertakes the loading and installation of workstations, laptops, and peripherals
\n
• Undertakes the installation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.
\n
• Utilizes appropriate testing equipment to test installed cables
\n
• Provides documentation of all information on all cable and equipment
\n
• improves upon existing installation and troubleshooting procedures
\n
• Performs cabling installations, including New Commercial Data, Voice, Fiber Optic and Paging
\n
• Operates a variety of tools, such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, scissor lifts, and test equipment
\n
• Tests systems and performs signal verification
\n
• Adheres to safety policies and procedures and reports all accidents, hazards, and equipment problems
\n
• Takes responsibility for installing new cables in new or existing buildings
\n
• Performs termination and testing of new cabling
\n
• Responsible for setting up new telecommunications frames
\n
• Installs Cat5e,Cat6, Cat6a, and fiber optic cabling systems
\n
• Builds and installs racks, dresses and terminates closets, carries out tests and troubleshoots
\n
• Labels, pulls, and terminates cable
\n
• Performs maintenance on cable systems by installing, repairing, programming, and upgrading cable infrastructure
\n
• Performs preventive maintenance and repairs by troubleshooting cabling system issues
\n
• Applies established procedures in testing every newly installed or relocated cable
\n
• Keeps cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standard
\n
• Promotes environmental, health, and safety policies within the workplace
\n
• Performs installation and routine maintenance of structured cabling systems
\n
• Works at heights, poles, and small confined spaces
\n
• Works outdoors and in inclement weather conditions
\n
• Installs devices for alarm, fire, security, access, and automation systems
\n
• Installation of ethernet, coaxial and fiber optic cabling
\n
• Installation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.
\n
• Installation of security cameras and access control hardware
\n
• Installation of network equipment including switches, firewalls, and wireless devices
\n
• Installation of computer equipment and peripherals
\n
• Performs termination and testing of cabling
\n
• Operates a variety of tools, such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, scissor lifts, and test equipment
\n

Position Requirements

\n
• Knowledge of labeling, pulling and dressing category 3, category 5e, category 6, category 6a and fiber optic
\n
• A strong working knowledge of TIA, EIA, BICSI, or NEC Standards; including installation, troubleshooting and service, and working knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, communication standards, and installation may be required
\n
• Experience with installing j-hooks, ladder racks and cable tray, and working in MDF/IDF environments may be required
\n
• Good knowledge of LAN/WAN networks, TCP/IP protocols and network technologies
\n
• Associate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
\n
• Industry certifications preferred (Examples: CCENT/CCNA, Network+, BICSI, Siemens, Corning, Leviton, AV, Fiber Optic)
\n
• Basic written and verbal communications skills are essential for documentation, report writing, and rapport building
\n
• Ability to work well both independently and as part of a professional team
\n
• Must be able to effectively prioritize tasks and complete them in good time applying planning and forward-thinking skills
\n
• Must be service oriented and capable of relationship building
\n
• Must be able to perform basic math functions and calculations
\n
• Strong computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
\n
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license
