Description
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with the safety and welfare of students with special needs loading and unloading, and en route to and from school. Ensures students are properly seated and secured by a safety restraint system when required. Provides basic first-aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for special needs students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of transporting students with physical and/or emotional disabilities. Ability to assist students with patience and understanding; Establish and maintain favorable working relationships with bus drivers, teachers, students, parents, and other school staff; Care for students with special needs and assist them while they are loading and unloading the bus/auto, and while en route to and from school; Apply common sense, stay calm and in control during emergency situations and act appropriately to ensure the safety of all students; Safely operate a hydraulic lift when necessary; Administer first aid when necessary. Must be able to perform basic math; Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; Solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include safety practices and procedures. Must be able to follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred : Certified in first aid and CPR (adult and child). A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Terms of Employment IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Lead Driver, Transportation Special Needs Specialist

- Stays abreast of the students' physical and/or emotional disabilities and uses appropriate procedures in assisting them;
- Assists the driver in emergency evacuation planning and drills;
- Becomes familiar with all routes to and from schools to be of assistance to driver.
- Assists the driver in maintaining a clean bus or vehicle;
- Operates hydraulic-lift equipment for the purpose of loading and unloading of wheelchair confined students;
- Provides basic first-aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for special needs students (e.g., apnea, asthma or other respiratory conditions assistive devices, g-tubes, shunts, oxygen, technological dependence, tracheotomy tubes, medical devices, administers emergency medications, etc.);
- Secures each student into his/her location with child safety restraint system, seat belts, wheelchair tie down and securement equipment or other safety equipment when required;
- Maintains order on the bus/auto and enforces safety rules. Follows authorized discipline procedures and guidelines with fairness and consistency;
- Cares for the students and attends to their personal needs while on the bus/auto;
- Remains alert and exercises good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles and irregular special requests by parents of riders;
- Passes pre-employment, safety and annual physical testing;
- Passes all random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the drug testing policy;
- Participates in meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions;
- Performs related work as required.
