BIPOC Critics Lab The Public Theater and The Old Globe are pleased to host the 2026-2027 BIPOC Critics Lab, developed and led by cultural critic Jose Solís. Solís has created an educational space for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) who have historically and systematically been excluded from cultural criticism. Program Overview The program is divided into sessions over a full theater season at The Public and The Old Globe, beginning with ten 90-minute weekly sessions for cohort members to define “What My Criticism Will Be”, to take place in the Fall of 2026. Additional learning opportunities will take place in the spring on a semi-regular basis. This iteration of the cohort will be a hybrid model of online sessions and optional in-person activities at your designated home theater. Participants who meet the attendance requirements will be assigned a future commissioned piece with compensation. Eligibility & Application Open to BIPOC applicants who reside within a commutable distance to either theater. Applicants who were not accepted to any past cohorts are encouraged to apply again; previously accepted Lab participants are ineligible to re-apply. Applications are open until Wednesday, July 8 at 11:59 p.m. EST; late submissions will not be considered. Attendance Requirements Members are required to attend the first cohort session and eight out of ten of the weekly sessions in Fall 2026. Missing the first session results in automatic removal; missing later sessions requires the participant to watch the recording. Benefits Participation is at no cost. Selected members will learn all aspects of arts journalism, receive support from BIPOC experts and guest speakers, and have the opportunity to create an upcoming commissioned piece with compensation. About the BIPOC Critics Lab The BIPOC Critics Lab was founded in 2020 by Jose Solís as the first-of-its-kind program to train and create work by emerging BIPOC theater journalists.
