Direct Counsel is seeking a Healthcare Associate or Counsel Attorney to join a highly respected national law firm with a sophisticated and nationally recognized healthcare practice.

Locations: San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego

Practice Area: Healthcare – Medical Staff Governance, Peer Review & Regulatory Matters

Overview

This is an exceptional opportunity to join a leading healthcare practice representing and advising hospitals, medical staffs, peer review bodies, healthcare executives, and institutional stakeholders throughout California. The position is open to both mid-level associates and experienced counsel-level attorneys with backgrounds in healthcare law, regulatory matters, litigation, administrative law, professional licensing, or related practice areas.

The role focuses on medical staff governance, credentialing, peer review, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and related litigation and administrative proceedings. Attorneys in this practice work closely with healthcare organizations on highly sensitive and complex matters that impact hospital operations, physician privileges, and institutional compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise hospital medical staffs, peer review committees, healthcare executives, and institutional stakeholders on governance, credentialing, peer review, and bylaws compliance matters
  • Represent healthcare entities in litigation, administrative proceedings, investigations, and dispute resolution matters
  • Counsel clients regarding healthcare regulatory requirements, patient safety concerns, and medical staff operations
  • Draft and revise medical staff bylaws, policies, governance documents, agreements, and related legal materials
  • Support and manage medical staff hearings, investigations, and peer review proceedings
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, briefs, and other substantive legal documents
  • Handle matters involving fairness, due process, procedural compliance, and professional licensing issues
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, healthcare executives, and organizational leadership to provide strategic and practical legal guidance
  • Analyze complex legal, operational, and regulatory issues while maintaining professionalism, discretion, and responsiveness

Qualifications

Associate Candidates

  • 3–7 years of legal experience
  • Experience in healthcare law, regulatory matters, litigation, administrative law, employment law, professional licensing, or related practice areas preferred

Counsel Candidates

  • 8+ years of legal experience
  • Significant experience advising healthcare organizations on regulatory, governance, litigation, or administrative matters

All Candidates

  • Prior experience with medical staff law, peer review, credentialing, or hospital governance is preferred but not required
  • Excellent legal writing, drafting, research, and analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage complex factual and regulatory issues
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle sensitive matters with professionalism
  • Admission to the California Bar required

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, level, qualifications, and geographic location.

Salary Range: $175,000 – $260,000

Attorneys may also be eligible for performance-based bonus opportunities and additional benefits offered by the firm.
