Communications Director
$130k - $150kFGA
OVERVIEW
The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) is hiring a Communications Director to lead our messaging team, craft our best messages, and get staff, allies, and the press to carry them into the policy debates that shape Americans' lives.
We want a standout writer or editor who can turn complex policy into a narrative that moves lawmakers and voters to act. You'll lead a responsive, forward-thinking team that sets the standard for policy messaging. If you're hungry, humble, and smart, and you know when and how to respond when the politics shift, this role is for you.
You'll need at least seven years in communications, messaging, or political writing, including experience managing a team. This role is fully remote, with travel for quarterly team meetings and occasional events.
CULTURE AND FIT
The people who consistently succeed at FGA are those whose actions and behavior reflect our five Core Values. If you adhere to these values and answer “yes” to each of the following questions, you may be a fit.
1) Candid to Solve : Being willing to have tough conversations in order to solve issues and build trust.
a) Do you seek out constructive feedback—and provide it to others—to solve issues and build trust with coworkers?
2) Grow or Die : We don’t have a neutral gear; we must consistently challenge ourselves and each other to grow in our talents and skills.
a) Are you aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and do you seek out complementary skills and growth in order to mitigate your weaknesses?
3) Politically Savvy: Policy doesn’t change in a vacuum, but in a political reality that we must understand and account for.
a) Do you agree that embracing the realities of politics is necessary to change public policy?
4) Partnership-Oriented : Internal and external relationships are not transactional. That starts with our team members and the perspective that we need the rest of the team to succeed in order to win personally.
a) Are you comfortable creating your own structure for work, such as setting work hours, your own priorities, and creating clarity and a work plan from a broad goal?
5) Bought in to Win : We’re at FGA because we want to change policy. No one is counting hours or widgets. We are here to get results, and sometimes, that will require going the extra mile or doing a job that isn’t technically ours.
a) Do you fully support FGA’s mission and believe that lives are improved through work, not welfare, and that free markets create more freedom and opportunity than government control?
A lack of fit with these values is the most common reason people don’t get hired or don’t last at FGA. Expect candid conversations about them in our interview process.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As Communications Director, you'll sit on the communications leadership team and report to FGA's Vice President of Communications. You will have six primary areas of responsibility:
1) Lead the Messaging Team
· Hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff and contractors so every seat on the team has the right person in it.
· Set clear roles, goals, and measures with each team member, and help each of them grow into FGA's next generation of leaders.
2) Drive Message Development
· Turn FGA's research and polling into messaging that helps staff and allies.
· Work with teams across FGA and outside partners to put our best messages in front of anyone debating our reforms.
3) Shape Messaging Strategy
· Work with the VP and leaders across FGA to shape the narrative arc across FGA's issues.
· Turn priorities into a core messaging framework built on tested language and help teams across FGA stay on message.
4) Own the Content Pipeline
· Own the quality and timeliness of everything the messaging team produces, from one-pagers and op-eds to donor letters and annual reports.
· Manage priorities and deadlines across the team's workload.
5) Guide Media Outreach
· Align FGA's media strategy with organizational priorities and track what lands.
· Develop bold story ideas that win major national placements, and partner with the media team to pitch them.
6) Craft Speeches and Public Remarks
· Write speeches and presentations for FGA leadership and allies that carry our strongest messages into the rooms where policy gets made.
· Serve as a spokesperson on FGA issues when needed.
REQUIREMENTS
At least seven years in communications, messaging, or political writing, including managing a team. Experience leading writers or editors is a plus.
Excellent writing and editing skills
A self-starter who can master FGA's issues and distill big ideas into clear, digestible language.
Politically savvy and comfortable working with lawmakers.
Comfortable using AI tools and teaching the team what works.
Able to travel for quarterly team meetings and occasional events.
Match FGA’s Core Values (described above).
TIMING, LOCATION, AND COMPENSATION
FGA is seeking to fill this position as soon as possible.
FGA’s headquarters are in Naples, FL, but nearly all our staff work remotely from across the country. We build our systems and culture around clarity, flexibility, and strong communication. Key elements of our environment include:
· Quarterly in-person team meetings at which you’ll build deeper relationships, set clear goals aligned with FGA’s big vision, and brainstorm how to seize new opportunities
· An intensive 90-day orientation to familiarize you with the FGA team, our policies, and how we operate
· Home office setup, including equipment and communication tools you need to hit the ground running
FGA offers a competitive salary of $130,000–$150,000, depending on experience and qualifications, along with a benefits package that includes a six percent retirement match, health benefits, and generous paid leave.
