Multiple positions available. The Temporary Property Security (Residence Halls) unit operates within the Fayetteville State University Department of Police and Public Safety. This unit is responsible for providing security support to the residence halls. This position will be responsible for patrolling the designated residence hall lobby area, hallways, exterior entrances/exits, and other areas within or immediately around the residence hall. It will also monitor access in each residence hall by checking IDs and Hall Entry Cards for each student who enters the building, along with guest registration during the assigned work hours. Work is completed primarily on the weekend, 16-64 hours per month (subject to change based on business needs). Description of Work: Secure, guard, and protect property and grounds. Patrol the interior and exterior of the residence hall on foot. Guard property against fire, damage, theft, or other hazards; monitor assigned areas for possible violations of policies, regulations, and rules of conduct; recognize and report unusual, suspicious, or hazardous situations. All Residence Hall Security Officers are directed to check the residence halls completely. The Residence Hall Security Officer should check the office and surrounding parameters each hour. Residence Hall Security Guards are not allowed to be watching television or patrolling from cars. During residence hall checks, the guards should be mindful of and document all discrepancies such as unlocked suite doors, unusual activities, strangers or non-students, quiet hour violations, emergency conditions, vehicle theft in parking areas, university property damage, visitation violations, disturbances, alcohol violations, drug violations, and/or other violations of university policy/student handbook. The Residence Hall Security Guards are to document and report their findings immediately to the dispatcher by radio. The dispatcher will then notify the appropriate personnel who will respond. After 12 o’clock midnight, all residence halls are locked from public access. Operate and maintain security enforcement equipment; maintain related records and security reports. At the beginning of each shift, the Residence Hall Security Guards will be briefed and receive training from police personnel and the Office of Residence Life. All Residence Hall Security Officers may be required to sign in/out at the Dispatch Office and their designated residence hall(s) or use the normal time‑tracking procedure established. Check student identification cards when necessary. Attend weekly residence hall staff meetings and participate in designated staff training activities as required by the Office of Residence Life and the Public Safety Department. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require a valid N.C. driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Technical Knowledge: Understands security, traffic, and parking enforcement practices. Knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to explain, apply, and enforce them. Displays organizational awareness and working knowledge of the infrastructure of the assigned area. Demonstrates proficiency in using a variety of security enforcement equipment, which may include gates, radios, computers, and other electronic devices. May perform routine maintenance on equipment. Communication Skills: Communicates information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure understanding. Listens and responds appropriately to messages from others. Communicates regarding issues that require judgment or interpretation. Explains policies, rules, and regulations with tact and courtesy. Completes reports; writes citations. Interacts with co‑workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, university officials, and the general public to provide assistance and relay information. Security, Patrol, and Enforcement: Patrols, guards, and secures property and grounds. Monitors assigned areas for possible violation of laws and regulations and issues parking citations when appropriate. Patrols, monitors, and guards an area with a higher assessed risk. Assists in emergency response. Provides support for special events; controls and directs traffic of people and vehicles; erects barricades; provides motorist assistance. Decision Making: Identifies problems/concerns and quickly takes appropriate action consistent with available facts, constraints, and anticipated consequences. Analyzes situations in order to make quick, sound decisions; recognizes critical incidents; initiates action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures. Possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License and ability to achieve certification as a DCI operator within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications: At least 3 years of local law enforcement experience.
