Equipment Technician

The Equipment Technician performs skilled maintenance, basic repairs, and adjustments on City vehicles, equipment, and machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. This is a temporary position working full-time hours through December 31, 2026.

Essential Job Functions:

• Performs preventive maintenance on City vehicles and equipment to maximize the effective life cycle of the equipment, reduce downtime, and improve the productivity of City staff.
• Inspects and diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems on City trucks, specialty vehicles, and equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs and prioritizes work; performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority and training and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Diagnoses and repairs vehicle and equipment engines and components, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines; uses technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct problems.
• Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems and sub-systems for electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and engine cooling systems.
• Performs equipment repairs, including mechanical and electrical systems, motors, and components.
• Researches service bulletins, recalls, and other repair procedures.
• Transports equipment from the field to the repair shop facility; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; identifies and reports vehicle problems requiring additional maintenance and repair; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority.
• Reviews status of vehicles and equipment and performs safety inspections; recommends equipment replacement and major repair options; installs auxiliary and specialized equipment.
• Orders parts and supplies and maintains records of parts requisitions and inventory.
• Maintains work orders, records, and logs of services performed and general vehicle information; reports any operational problems to the supervisor in a timely manner; completes reports as required.
• Maintains shop facility, cleans work areas, and removes debris; disposes of lubricants and chemicals in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Responds to emergencies as directed.
• Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.

Qualification Requirements:

• Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED; and two (2) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines, electric motors, and mechanical and electrical systems.
• Methods used in a preventive maintenance program.
• Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment and components.
• City rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in a shop environment.
• Operation, maintenance and repair standards for specialized vehicles and equipment.
• City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, and facility locations.
• Proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
• Performing a full range of skilled and semi-skilled vehicle maintenance work.
• Identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
• Working independently and using initiative within established procedural guidelines.
• Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel, and electrical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Performing computerized diagnostic tests on vehicle components and equipment.
• Safe use of power and hand tools, chemicals, lubricants, and cleaning compounds.
• Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
• Maintaining accurate service records.
• Following and maintaining safety standards.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
• LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Possess and keep current the following certifications:
• CDL-B certification (preferred)
• First Aid/CPR certification
• Valid WA State Driver's License with a driving record free from frequent or serious violations. A three (3) year driving record abstract must be submitted prior to hire

Working Conditions & Physical Abilities:

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED: Various types of tools and equipment maybe used to include hoists, jacks, engine analyzers, hand and air tools, tire changers, welders, sanders, grinder and specialty tools such as brake lathe, wheel balance, front-end alignment and computer diagnostics. Specifications, state bid documents, equipment rental schedule, budget, computer, calculator, fuel tank meters and receipts and paper records are used for Fleet Services and purchasing. Absorption materials, paper logs and records and manufacturers safety data sheets are needed in coordinating hazardous waste disposal. Future work practices may necessitate the use of different tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Work is performed primarily in a mechanical shop and occasionally in the field. Hazards include traffic, heavy or sharp equipment, and flammable liquids or fuels. Exposure to noise, vibration, hazardous and toxic materials, fumes, gases and odors is routine. Work requires strength and agility necessary to perform manual labor under all kinds of weather conditions. Activities include combinations of sitting, standing and walking and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. It requires the ability to see, hear and smell in order to detect problems and be responsive. Work requires the ability to foresee and prevent safety problems and must follow appropriate safety procedures including the use of protective clothing and equipment. Public Works teams operate in a smoke- and drug-free work environment for their health, safety, and productivity, as well as that of their co-workers and customers. DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING: The City of Mercer Island has a policy to maintain a work environment free of substance abuse. This policy applies to all current and prospective employees. Drug and alcohol testing is required for employees and candidates applying for safety-sensitive positions or whose job requires a commercial drivers license (CDL). This testing may be waived for job candidates if records are made available from another employer who tested the candidate in the last six months. Positive test results will be defined as an alcohol concentration over 0.02 or a positive test result for marijuana, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines or phencyclidines. All employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing a drug and alcohol test. Job candidates who test positive will be terminated from consideration for employment immediately.
