About the Organization Covering over 1,800 square miles, Desert Recreation District (DRD) provides recreational services to more than 380,000 residents throughout the Greater Coachella Valley. DRD works with municipalities in a collective effort to assure equitable service delivery to every community regardless of economic means. The District boundary has expanded in recent years to provide barrier‑free, safe service to more unincorporated areas of the Coachella Valley and municipalities not previously served. DRD is responsible for over 30 recreational facilities, including community and fitness centers, sports fields, swimming pools, a golf course and driving range, and various parks and open spaces. DRD creates and delivers quality programs, services, and classes; facilitates leisure opportunities through partnerships that encourage residents to engage in healthy lifestyles and wellness activities. Full‑Time/Part‑Time: Part‑Time Exempt/Non‑Exempt: Non‑Exempt Hourly/Salary Range: $19.10 – $23.86 Job Description DEFINITION: Under general supervision (Instructor I/II) or direction (Instructor III/IV), provides routine‑to‑advanced instruction in a specific sport, recreation, and/or leisure program, class, or activity; conducts lessons and classes tailored to participant interests and abilities; demonstrates skills and supervises program participants; continuously monitors participants to ensure their safety; maintains participant/program records; and performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision or direction from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Instructor I: Begins instruction and delivers lessons within a specific program area, including groups of youth, teens, adults, and/or seniors. Exercises judgment and initiative, receives occasional assistance, and is familiar with operating procedures and policies. Instructor II: Delivers a variety of lessons within a specific program area, includes groups across all age groups. Exercises judgment and initiative, receives occasional assistance, and is familiar with operating procedures and policies. Instructor III: Performs more advanced, specialized work requiring advanced skills and training. Exercises judgment and initiative, receives occasional assistance, and is familiar with operating procedures and policies. Instructor IV: Performs the most advanced, specialized work requiring extensive training and industry certifications. Exercises judgment and initiative, receives occasional assistance, and is familiar with operating procedures and policies. Allocation within the classification series is determined by the specialized nature of the instructional activity, market competition, and the level of knowledge, skills, and abilities possessed by the incumbent. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY): Lead, teach, and conduct sports, recreation, and/or leisure activities for groups of youth, teens, adults, and/or seniors. Provide technical guidance by demonstrating skills, methods, and techniques to ensure proper form and safety. Supervise participants during instruction; maintain class control; monitor activities to prevent accidents and ensure safety. Resolve program issues within guidelines and suggest improvements. Implement and monitor District procedures related to participant safety. Work collaboratively with participants and parents to foster a positive learning environment. Respond to questions and concerns from participants and the public; resolve or refer issues. Maintain participant and program records. Inspect class sites, facilities, and equipment for safety; report maintenance needs. Encourage participation and good sportsmanship. Observe all District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Administer first aid and CPR when necessary. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge of: Instructional methods and techniques applicable to the subject area. Program activity implementation methods and techniques. Age‑ and ability‑appropriate program content. Operations, services, and activities of the program. Principles, practices, procedures, and equipment of the subject area. General office and business administrative practices. Care and proper use of recreational equipment and supplies. Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures. Basic principles and procedures of record keeping. District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols, including first aid and CPR. Customer‑service techniques for dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and staff. English language structure for effective communication. Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and coordination. Ability to: Lead and teach assigned program classes or activities. Oversee program operations and activities. Interpret and apply facility use policies and procedures. Conduct age‑ and ability‑appropriate activities. Monitor participants continuously to ensure safety, discipline, and order. Apply laws, codes, regulations, policies, and standards relevant to work performed. Provide courteous assistance to participants, parents, patrons, and the public. Maintain facilities and equipment safely and cleanly. Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written documentation. Use tact, initiative, and judgment within policy and legal guidelines. Use computer systems and business equipment to perform work tasks. Communicate clearly in writing and orally in English. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Typical methods to obtain qualifications are: Instructor I/II/III/IV: Education: Equivalent to completion of 12th grade. Instructor I: Experience: One (1) year providing direct instruction/coaching in a sports, recreation, or leisure program. Instructor II: Experience: Two (2) years providing direct instruction/coaching. Instructor III: Experience: Three (3) years providing direct instruction/coaching. Instructor IV: Experience: Four (4) years providing direct instruction/coaching. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. Possession of valid First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications for adult, child, and infant. Instructor I: Successful completion of DRD's proprietary instructor training modules within six (6) months of hire. Instructor II: Possession of a basic/entry‑level license or certification from a national governing body required for the instructional specialty. Instructor III: Possession of an intermediate‑level license or certification from a national governing body. Instructor IV: Possession of an advanced‑level license or certification from a national governing body.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
