Qualifications

A scorer must

• hold a Teaching Credential in California corresponding to the content field, have at least three years of teaching experience, and be teaching or have taught within the last three years in California;
• or be an instructor in a California institution of higher education who, in the last three years, has taught classes corresponding to the content field;
• or have served as a Single Subject Assessments for Teaching scorer in the content field;
• or have continuing experience as a scorer in the content field after having met one of the above qualifications;
• or have an authorization to teach in California public schools in the corresponding content field and is a current California resident;
• or hold a graduate degree in the content field and is a current California resident;
• or hold a bachelor's degree and have several years' professional experience in the content field and is a current California resident;
• or hold a bachelor's degree and/or master's degree and be a graduate student currently teaching courses in the content field in the state of California;
• or have served as a CTC-approved member of the appropriate CSET test development and/or standard setting panel and is a current California resident;
• or be a CTC-approved scorer.

• be a resident of California with eligibility to work in the United States.

Overall Responsibilities

• Evaluate responses to test questions by California teacher candidates
• Internalize scoring standards, participate in discussions, and engage with other scorers in consensus scoring activities
• Recognize and discuss various types of bias (e.g., implicit bias, cultural bias, leniency bias, central tendency bias, halo effect) and effect strategies to reduce personal biases in scoring
• Meet quality and productivity requirements established for the scoring program, including passing a qualifying test before scoring

Working Conditions

Scoring sessions take place during the week Monday through Friday. Scoring sessions will occur on an intermittent basis, every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the subject or every 2 weeks for Multiple Subjects Science. The scoring day runs from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m., including training. Scores can expect to work 8-24 hours a month for Multiple Subject Science. 4-7 hours a month for Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science, 4-7 hours every two months for Music, Art, Dance, and Home Economics and 16-24 hours every 2 months for Physical Education. Training takes place before scoring begins. There may be a brief orientation meeting before the day of scoring occurs.
