Head Cross Country Coach

Head Coach Starting Date: Immediately Minimum Qualifications Teacher certification as required by the state – employed certified professional educator within the county (regular full‑time or substitute) or an authorized individual certified by the WVSSAC if a certified employee is not available. Knowledgeable in sports regarding rules and regulations of school policy and the WVSSAC Handbook. Immediate Supervisor(s) Principal, Athletic Director, Head Coach

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and support in area of responsibility. Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility. Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility. Maintaining professional work habits. Maintaining and upgrading professional skills. Evaluating personnel under supervision.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Leadership and support: Implement the entire program and overall supervision of the team, including JV and 9th‑grade teams; direct assignments and duties of assistant coaches; keep practice periods within predetermined time allotments;; maintain and protect equipment; maintain regular contact with the athletic director; maintain inventory and records; submit requisitions for uniforms and equipment; secure facilities after practice; prepare facilities for games and contests; obtain athlete physical exam reports; review GPA every six weeks, referring below‑2.0 students to the athletic director; ensure team conduct under jurisdiction; emphasize safety; inform team of all school and athletic rules, with emphasis on the Athletic Code of Conduct. Improvement process: Conduct a self‑evaluation at season end and make improvement recommendations; implement sportsmanship, health, and welfare programs; stay current with WVSSAC rules; attend rules clinics; develop professional skills through clinics, reading, advanced degrees, and associations. Public and employee relations: Develop relationships with school and community; communicate trip departure times and transportation plans; post practice schedules; clarify award policies; maintain media relationships. Professional work habits: Be punctual; respond positively to suggestions; cooperate with staff; maintain appearance; conduct self and team ethically. Personnel evaluation: Observe, document, and assist in evaluating assistant coaches; provide recommendations for improvement.
