Available Opportunities Museum Educator: Part-Time Job Summary The Museum Educator part‑time is a position with the Museum’s Interpretive and Educational staff. Part‑time educators may work up to 40 hours per week, but will average 29 hours or less per week over the year; there is no guaranteed minimum. Responsibilities include performing historical interpretation in costume at all museum sites, outdoors and sometimes during inclement weather. Educators perform all listed responsibilities, general and specific, and are expected to learn and provide all shipboard presentations, demonstrations, and activities. They are eligible to work all billets during normal day operations, overnight programs, off‑site, and museum special events. Educators may also serve as Chief of the Watch, a program leader who manages operations over a specific museum site or program. Educators report directly to the Museum Public Programs Coordinators. Essential Functions Provide public presentations and programs on any of the museum’s sites: the Sloop‑of‑War USS Constellation, the WWII submarine USS Torsk, the WWII cutter USCGC Taney, the light ship Chesapeake, and the Seven‑foot Knoll Light House. Demonstrate mastery of program subject matter, adhere to approved curricula, and continue developing further expertise in our subject area. Execute all programs according to approved plans and schedules, ensuring all program elements are included. Wear a historical costume, including hats, and exhibit a positive, friendly interaction and demeanor with visitors and guests. Maintain and provide your own 20th Century Naval costume, including dark‑wash denim blue jeans, black shoes, and a light blue cotton chambray shirt, and maintain the HSB‑provided 19th‑century naval costume and a dixie cup hat. Monitor, provide for, and protect the safety of the vessels and all visitors by following established safety policies. Perform daily routine duties and custodial maintenance at museum sites in accordance with museum directives. Other Organizational Responsibilities Support museum efforts such as “all‑hands” activities including the 4th of July celebration, New Year’s Eve celebration, Victory Night, and Pearl Harbor Day. Perform physical activities associated with boarding and departing sites, opening and closing sites. Work catered events that may require evening hours and, rarely, overnight programs. During overnight programs, the educator will spend the night on the assigned ship. Post and operate any of the various visitor service desks in the museum. Operate the gift shop counter, register, and restocking procedures. Promote a positive work ethic and good morale among ship’s staff and volunteers. Assist with preservation maintenance efforts including ship‑moving, clearing snow, loading equipment, etc. Qualifications As a trainee, candidates must have completed training and passed qualification for all active museum programs. A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Science, History, or a related field is preferred, or a minimum of one year of post‑high school study in the same or work in education programming. A higher degree may substitute for one year of museum programming experience. Must be available for weekend work shifts. Work Environment Must wear appropriate, clean, and serviceable historical costume, including hats, while on duty. Must be able to talk with and hear museum visitors, often stand, walk to various locations, and be exposed to various outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to perform moderate lifting, pulling lines, operating shipboard equipment, traversing ladders, and navigating low overhead spaces. Benefits Hourly pay $15.00–$17.00. Pay begins at $15.00/hr and increases to $17.00/hr after training completion. Additional 10‑20% pay bonus for overnight work and 10% additional pay when serving as Chief Educator. VSRs may be scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week, but will average 29 hours or less per week over the course of a year. VSRs should be available on weekends and holidays, and perform all general and specific responsibilities described below. Essential Functions Serve as the primary contact with visitors, greeting, interacting, communicating, and addressing concerns and questions. Provide a high‑quality visitor experience, maintaining a positive attitude, politeness, and friendliness toward all visitors. Perform daily routine duties and minor custodial tasks in accordance with museum protocols. Keep gift shop shelves neat and stocked with merchandise. Use computer‑based point‑of‑sale system to process ticket and merchandise payments. Practice safe, effective, and exemplary work habits. Promote a positive work ethic, good morale, and professionalism among ship’s staff and volunteers. Know and communicate ticketing and operations policies, prices, and information to visitors. Comply with museum directives and protocols associated with all sites, including those of other departments and department heads. Serve as the primary contact for visitors managing ticketing, will‑call, merchandise, and event registration sales and check‑ins. Organizational Responsibilities Support museum‑sponsored activities such as “all‑hands” events including the 4th of July celebration, New Year’s Eve celebration, Victory Night, “The Blast,” and Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies. Learn and demonstrate mastery of procedures for handling admission and retail operations at all HSB locations. Inform each visitor of updates to daily operations such as site closures and program updates. Work museum special and catered events as assigned. Wear clean, serviceable dress complying with dress code while on duty. Be available, generally, for weekends, holidays, overnight programs, and special evening programs/events. Know and inform visitors about Baltimore Water Taxi tickets and operations. Job Qualifications Effectively handle visitor questions and concerns, stressful situations, and demonstrate decisiveness and quick thinking. At least a high‑school diploma or current student status. Must be able to perform necessary physical activity. Must be available for weekend and holiday work. Work Environment VSRs must complete physical activities associated with boarding and departing ships and buildings, opening and closing sites, working outdoors during inclement weather, and moving through buildings and ships. They may be required to shovel snow from piers and ship decks and gangways. VSRs may work catered events requiring late hours, sometimes until after midnight, and special programs that may require late work.
