Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Firmware Design Engineer

Position Overview We are looking for an experienced Field‑Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Firmware Design Engineer (Senior Member of Technical Staff/Engineering Specialist – Embedded Software Engineering) to lead teams in developing next‑generation technology prototypes at xLab’s Sensors and Systems Division. Responsibilities Architect, code, simulate, and verify complex digital logic for FPGAs using VHDL. Integrate FPGAs with other components and ensure system‑level performance. Collaborate with board designers to ensure proper schematic design, layout, and routing of circuit boards. Use lab equipment for board bring‑up, characterization, and resolution of timing/signal‑integrity issues; perform testing and debugging. Create detailed technical specifications, conduct design reviews, and collaborate with other technical and program office teams. Location Full‑time onsite role in El Segundo, CA or Chantilly, VA, requiring at least four days of onsite presence. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM field. 4+ years of experience in prototype or technology development in embedded systems and FPGA development (minimum for Senior Member of Technical Staff); 6+ years for Engineering Specialist. Experience with VHDL programming, simulation, validation, FPGA synthesis, and implementation (timing, power, area, constraints). Proficiency in FPGA design tools such as Xilinx Vivado, Microsemi Libero, or equivalent. Current Secret security clearance issued by the U.S. government; U.S. citizenship required. Willingness to travel domestically as needed. Preferred Experience High‑speed digital design ( System‑on‑Chip (SoC) design, test, and integration. Experience instantiating Microchip and/or Xilinx Zynq soft‑core IP processors. Familiarity with standard electrical interfaces (RS232/RS422 UART, SPI, I²C, USB, Ethernet, SpaceWire, eSATA, PCIe). Hardware debugging skills and experience with power supplies, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and/or logic analyzers. Current TS/SCI clearance (for Engineering Specialist).
