Assistant United States Attorney (Affirmative Civil Enforcement - ACE)

Summary Our mission is to enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States, provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime, seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior, and ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. Duties Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Division represent the federal government and its agencies in civil litigation in the Western District of Texas and in appeals before the Fifth Circuit. The selected attorney will be assigned to the Affiant Civil Enforcement (ACE) unit, handling a diverse docket that includes: Investigations and civil cases filed under the False Claims Act, including qui tam complaints, health care fraud investigations, and procurement fraud matters Civil penalty actions for violations of the Controlled Substances Act and other federal statutes Other litigation to enforce national health, safety, and economic welfare laws Typical responsibilities include: Conducting legal research and drafting legal memoranda Preparing and responding to written discovery Taking and defending depositions or examinations Overseeing and coordinating investigations Representing the United States in judicial proceedings at the trial and appellate levels Conducting public outreach and educational activities Eligibility Residency Requirements: AUSAs must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof (see 28 U.S.C. 545 for district‑specific information). Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify mandatory enrollment in the Selective Service System. Conditions of Employment U.S. citizen or national Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax, and drug testing Continued employment subject to favorable background investigation Registered for Selective Service if applicable J.D. degree and active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction Must reside in the designated district or within 25 miles of it Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree Active membership in a U.S. bar At least one year of post‑J.D. legal or other relevant experience U.S. citizenship Preferred Qualifications: Strong academics and superior legal writing and research ability Outstanding organizational skills and analytical ability Good judgment, courtroom skills, and commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service All qualification requirements met by the closing date of the announcement Salary Information The pay range for AD‑21 through AD‑29 is: Austin: $78,905 to $197,100 (includes 20.35% locality pay) Additional positions may be filled using this announcement. Relocation Expenses Not authorized. Travel Occasional travel may be required. Failure to disclose may result in disciplinary action, including removal from federal service.
