Bus Operator

Job Overview Under general supervision, operates a variety of transit buses to transport passengers along assigned routes according to the District’s requirements. Provide service in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner. After completing the Golden Gate Transit Training Program, the employee will operate regularly scheduled assignments. All runs originate in Santa Rosa, Novato, or San Rafael. Hourly Pay: $32.46–$38.19 Sign‑On Bonus: $1,000 upon completing training; additional $1,000 on 1‑year employment anniversary. Responsibilities Transport passengers along assigned routes, making designated stops as required or requested. Use the fare box to accurately collect fares, issue transfers, and provide general information. Complete reports on patron count, non‑scheduled mileage, vehicle deficiencies, fare box, accidents, and other required reports. Operate the automatic lift on buses and assist passengers in wheelchairs, on crutches or walkers, or with speech or mental difficulty. Ensure the driver’s license and all other documents required of a commercial licensee are current, valid, and maintained. Follow safety and health rules and applicable safety practices. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors, and others using principles of excellent customer service. Perform additional related duties as assigned. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and performance. Qualifications No experience is necessary. Licensed driver for at least seven (7) years with a satisfactory driving record. No reckless driving or DUI in the last seven (7) years. No more than one moving violation and no “at‑fault” accidents within the last three (3) years. No license suspension, revocation, or probation in the last three (3) years. No convictions of California State Vehicle Code 20001 (leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury or death). No failures to appear or pay on the DMV printout at the time of submission. Must pass the Student Bus Driver Training Program and a 120‑day probationary period. Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver’s license; ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) is part of the training program. Physical Requirements Vision at or correctable to 20/40 (Snellen), field of vision of at least 70° horizontally, and ability to recognize the colors red, green, and amber. Hearing in at least one ear allowing perception of a whispered voice at five (5) feet. No loss of foot, leg, hand, or arm; no significant impairment that interferes with vehicle operation. No diabetes mellitus currently treated with insulin for control unless the person meets 49 CFR 391.46. No cardiovascular disease accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive cardiac failure. No pulmonary dysfunction likely to interfere with safe driving; no hypertension likely to interfere with safe driving; no rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, vascular, epilepsy, or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with safe driving. Must pass the District’s pre‑employment drug and physical tests, and obtain at least a six‑month medical clearance. Ability to sit comfortably for prolonged periods, manipulate controls, lift/carry up to 50 pounds, push/pull, and tie‑down wheelchairs. Constant mental alertness while driving, particularly in heavy traffic, and ability to work varied shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of District policies, labor agreement provisions, occupational health and safety rules, and working practices applicable to this position. Read, write, and speak English; basic mathematical ability; smooth operation of coaches; ability to follow instructions and work independently. Effective communication with a diverse public in a courteous, calm, and professional manner under all circumstances; ability to respond quickly, accurately, and pleasantly to customer needs. Clear and professional speech; ability to work during the week and evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
