Financial Controller

A growing national field services company is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead and strengthen its accounting and finance function. This company operates in a fast-paced, seasonal, equipment-heavy service environment supporting commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure-related customers. The business requires strong financial visibility across job costing, field labor, payroll, fleet and equipment, customer contracts, billing, cash flow, and operating performance. This is an excellent opportunity for a Controller or Accounting Manager who understands service-based operations and wants to work closely with ownership and operations leadership in a high-impact role. Position Summary The Controller will oversee the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, payroll oversight, job costing, equipment and fixed asset tracking, customer billing, internal controls, and financial analysis. The ideal candidate will bring experience from a field-based, seasonal, construction, snow and ice management, landscaping, facilities services, transportation, equipment rental, or other service-oriented business where labor, equipment, dispatch, customer contracts, and job profitability matter. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can manage the details while also helping ownership make better decisions through accurate financial reporting and operational analysis. Key Responsibilities Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll support, and cash management. Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, cash flow reports, and operational finance dashboards for ownership and leadership. Manage job costing and profitability analysis across customer accounts, service lines, crews, equipment, labor, materials, subcontractors, and seasonal work. Partner with operations leadership to review job margins, labor efficiency, equipment utilization, customer profitability, contract performance, and seasonal trends. Oversee billing accuracy, collections, accounts receivable aging, vendor payments, and working capital needs. Support payroll-related accounting and reporting for a field-based workforce, including seasonal staffing changes and high-volume operating periods. Maintain accurate fixed asset records, fleet and equipment tracking, depreciation schedules, leases, financing, repairs, purchases, and disposals. Develop and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning processes. Strengthen accounting procedures, internal controls, approval workflows, documentation, and reporting consistency. Work closely with external accountants, tax advisors, insurance partners, lenders, banks, and other outside partners as needed. Provide financial analysis for pricing, contract renewals, equipment purchases, leasing decisions, labor planning, expansion, and strategic initiatives. Identify opportunities to improve systems, reporting, automation, close efficiency, job costing accuracy, and financial visibility. Help build a scalable finance and accounting structure that can support continued growth. What We’re Looking For Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred. 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience. Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, Finance Manager, or similar role. Experience in snow and ice management, landscaping, construction, facilities services, field services, transportation, logistics, equipment rental, paving, roofing, restoration, waste services, or another labor/equipment-heavy service business is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, month-end close, financial statements, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management. Experience with job costing, customer profitability, project/service accounting, labor costing, equipment tracking, or fleet-based accounting. Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting systems such as QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, Foundation, Viewpoint, Acumatica, Xero, or similar platforms. Ability to work in a seasonal business where priorities can shift quickly based on weather, customer demand, staffing, equipment needs, and operating volume. Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial results clearly to ownership, operations, and non-finance leaders. Hands-on, detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable working in a growing company environment. CPA, CMA, MBA, public accounting, or construction/service accounting background is a plus, but not required.
