This role involves direct supervision of a pipe crew, maintaining high standards of safety and quality control (including trench safety and pressure testing), and ensuring all pipeline infrastructure is installed to precise line and grade. Key Duties & Responsibilities Execution & Quality Control Oversee and direct daily pipe-laying operations, including trenching, shoring, bedding, pipe placement, and backfilling. Read, understand, and accurately implement utility profiles, blueprints, and site specifications to ensure correct invert elevations and pitch. Conduct regular inspection/verification checks, including laser setup, manhole vacuum testing, and pressure testing, to ensure all work meets municipal and project standards. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve on-site utility conflicts or soil stability issues to keep the project moving forward smoothly. Crew & Safety Leadership Supervise/lead a pipe crew, ensuring crew members are properly trained in trench safety, rigging, and pipe-joining techniques. Ensure all crew members/subcontractors adhere to OSHA subpart P (Excavations) and site-specific safety standards. Oversee the proper use and maintenance of specialized equipment and tools (excavators, trench shields, pipe lasers, and fusion machines). Project Coordination & Reporting Coordinate with the Superintendent to schedule material deliveries (pipe, stone, structures) and ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget. Ensure timely delivery, proper handling, and secure storage of all pipe inventory and fittings. Maintain accurate and timely crew member time sheets, daily production logs, and "as-built" documentation. Accurately track daily footage yields and document any subsurface utility strikes or soil changes. Qualifications/What We’re Looking For Minimum 5+ years of experience specifically in underground utility (water, storm, sewer) construction. Proven success in on-site leadership and pipe crew supervision within a heavy civil environment. Expert-level understanding of trench safety, sloping, and shoring requirements. Deep knowledge of underground utility principles, including gravity-fed systems, pressure mains, and diverse pipe materials (PVC, DIP, RCP, HDPE). Proficient in reading and interpreting utility profiles, blueprints, and grade stakes. Experience operating heavy equipment in tight utility corridors, including large excavators and loaders. Strong commitment to safety and quality, with a “do it right the first time” mentality. Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening/physical. Ability to work out of town as required by project schedules.
