Job Details Job ID: 5735139 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: May 22, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Job Summary This position coordinates and monitors the activities of workers engaged in performing custodial duties in order to maintain the schools and division buildings in a clean and orderly condition so that full educational use of it may be made at all times. Duties and Responsibilities Develops and monitors work schedules for staff; assigns work areas. Keeps Custodial Services Supervisor informed of any personnel changes or areas not covered for maintenance. Ensures that the building is opened on time each day. Ensures that all exit doorways are free and open. Checks to see that all upcoming functions or events held in the school and on fields are properly set up. Supervises the activities of workers engaged in custodial activities. Checks the cleanliness of custodial equipment, building and grounds and other surrounding areas, hallways and restroom areas. Checks and secures doors and windows in rooms and buildings. Identifies and reports existing and potential maintenance and safety problems. Assists staff with problems they encounter. Cleans, repairs, and maintains equipment. Removes broken or damaged glass. Prepares work orders for Maintenance Department. Changes wall panels to form different class room configuration. Assists in snow removal and other emergency situations. Monitors heating/cooling related equipment and their operations on roof of building. Maintains a variety of records. Evaluates the performance of staff assigned; recommends the hiring and disciplining of personnel. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required) Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Virginia, and must have a good driving record based upon the criteria of the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. Must be physically able to comply with drug and alcohol testing requirements as outlined by Department of Transportation regulations. Within 90 days of employment must have met requirements for and receive a commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued by the State of Virginia. Employees whose CDL is either revoked, suspended or rendered invalid are subject to termination. Extensive experience supervising the activities of workers engaged in custodial work, preferably in a K-12 school system or similar environment. Extensive custodial and maintenance experience. Knowledge of the basic techniques of electrical repair and maintenance, carpentry, and general maintenance. Knowledge of custodial equipment and ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Supervision Exercised Supervises the duties of assigned custodial staff. Supervision Received Performs duties under the supervision of the Custodial Services Supervisor. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Frequent interruptions, changing priorities, heavy‑duty lifting, occasional work in inclement weather. Exposure to cleaning agents, potential electrical hazards, and various types of cleaning equipment. Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 100 pounds. Ability to stand, stoop and bend for long periods of time. Ability to work in various types of environmental conditions.
