Hours: PRN: as needed during hours of nurse vacancies. PRN nurses are required to work a minimum of 8 hours per month to remain an active CHA employee

The PRN nurse will complete special assignments delegated by the school health administrators, assist school nurses in meeting the needs of their school community and act as a substitute school nurse. The nurse assigned to fill-in at a school will function independently and must demonstrate autonomy in decision-making and practice. The school nurse will temporarily assume the role of provider of student health care and planner/coordinator of the school health program at the assigned school.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assigned to fill-in at a school, functions independently and must demonstrate autonomy in decision-making and practice
• Provide identification, assessment, planning, interviewing and evaluation of student health concerns
• Interprets health status of pupils to parents and school personnel
• Assures that appropriate documentation of school health activities is complete
• Administers medications, treatment plans, and/or specialized healthcare procedures per medical provider's orders
• Maintains accurate documentation and records
• Ensures secure storage of medications
• Trains staff and supervises activities
• Delegates procedures in manner consistent with the NC Nurse Practice Act and supporting position statements
• Counsels and educates students concerning chronic health conditions, mental health issues, substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision making
• Serves as a liaison between school/home/communities and initiates referrals to parents, school staff and community

Education/Experience: BSN: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation; or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an associate degree program for nursing. Experience in school nursing, pediatrics, emergency department or home health preferred.

License: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Current CPR certification. Valid N.C. driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• General knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs
• Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health
• Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to healthcare
• Knowledge of available resources and organizations
• Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions
• Possess ability to secure cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships
• Accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions
