IT SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Served by: Shepherd of Facilities & Families Part-time, approximately 15–20 hours per week, hourly, non-exempt Pay: $28-$30/hour – Cap at 20 hours/week (Talk to manager for any overages) Scope: Provides day-to-day technology support for church staff and maintains the systems they depend on. This is a hands-on role, the first call when something stops working and the one who keeps devices, accounts, and documentation in order between calls. Responsibilities Serve as the first point of contact for staff technology problems: computers, printers, phones, email, file access, and church software. Triage incoming requests, set expectations on turnaround, and follow through to resolution. Support staff in-person, remotely, and by phone. Train staff on church systems and answer how-to and policy questions. Draw on the professional knowledge and experience of IT volunteers for church projects and as-needed support, scoping the work around their availability and reviewing results. Devices and accounts (30%) Set up, deploy, reclaim, and retire staff computers and mobile devices, managing them through the MDM and device enrollment platforms with device groups, configuration profiles, and application deployment. Maintain the device inventory: who has what, how old it is, warranty status, and when it needs replacing. Administer Google Workspace: user accounts, groups, aliases, and shared drive access. Process the IT side of staff onboarding and offboarding, so new hires start with the access and equipment they need and departing staff have their accounts closed out with church files preserved. Coordinate timing with HR so access changes line up with employment dates. Network, infrastructure, and security (25%) Maintain the campus network and diagnose connectivity and wireless problems at the switch, access point, and client level. Monitor network and system alerting and respond to outages. Administer remote access VPN: client configuration, account provisioning, and periodic review of who still needs access. Maintain server and backup systems and verify that backups restore. Serve as the point of contact for the internet service provider: report and track outages, coordinate service calls and circuit changes, and confirm delivered bandwidth and uptime against the service agreement. Maintain endpoint and account security settings, including multi-factor authentication coverage, and respond to phishing reports and security incidents. Software, vendors, and documentation (15%) Administer the church’s cloud applications, including the church management system and ministry tools: user access, permissions, integrations, and review of third-party app access. Maintain the software inventory and renewal calendar, and coordinate payment with Accounting ahead of expiration. Serve as the day-to-day contact for software and hardware vendors, and elevate problems that exceed what can be handled in house. Write and maintain SOPs, runbooks, and system documentation so recurring IT work is repeatable by someone else. Qualifications Required Two or more years in desktop support, help desk, or a similar hands-on IT role. Strong macOS support skills. Working knowledge of Windows and iOS. Google Workspace administration experience, plus administration of other SaaS platforms. Experience managing devices through an MDM platform. Practical networking knowledge: VLANs, switch ports, wireless troubleshooting, DNS, DHCP, and VPN. Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical staff clearly and patiently. Ability to manage a queue of competing requests and communicate status. Preferred Experience in a church, nonprofit, or other small environment where IT is a team of one. Experience writing technical documentation. Experience directing volunteers or temporary help on technical work. Working conditions Weekday business hours, with occasional evening or weekend work for maintenance windows and church events. Regular movement between campus buildings.
