Job Title: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Unit Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 1-2 years in acute care setting License: Registered Nurse Certifications: BLS Must-Have: - Ostomy care experience - IV skills - Experience in fast-paced environments - Experience in admissions and discharges - Basic medication skills Description: This position involves working in a medical and telemetry setting. The facility is a Level III Trauma Center with a Magnet Designation. There are 933 total beds and 28 in the general medical surgical unit. Patients typically present with conditions such as chest pain, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and cellulitis. Surgical patients are rarely present, and the average patient stay is around 36 hours. Daily, RNs will admit and discharge 2-3 patients. Patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:6-8 at night. During daytime shifts, there is a tech available for every 5 patients and during nights, a tech for every 9 patients. Support on the unit includes a charge nurse with a lighter patient assignment, a unit secretary available 24/7, and hospitalist coverage around the clock. Respiratory Therapy is also available 24/7, as well as centralized telemetry monitoring and phlebotomy assistance. Experience with heparin, insulin, Cardizem, and Amiodarone drip management is required. Patients are primarily ambulatory. This role involves necessary documentation of pain levels before and after administering pain medication, ensuring compliance with medication orders. The schedule operates on a rotational weekend basis, created six weeks in advance. Time off requests are manageable up to seven days. Holiday expectations include working one holiday per season. Scrub colors are flexible, excluding camo and denim. The facility adheres to a fatigue policy, ensuring staff cannot work excessively long hours.
