Description: The nurse will complete the RN assessment 2-3 days prior to surgery with the patient via phone. The nurse will go through the patient's medical and surgical history. The nurse will update the patient's allergies and medications. The nurse will provide NPO and medication instructions based on hospital and anesthesia policy. The nurse will contact the surgeon's office or the patient's primary care provider to obtain preoperative requirements. The nurse will review the preoperative History and Physical to determine if the patient needs an EKG, lab work, or Cardiac Clearance prior to surgery. If there are any issues with the patient, the nurse will consult with the anesthesia floor runner to discuss and obtain recommendations. The RN should be able to talk on the phone and document the assessment simultaneously. The role requires strong communication skills and attention to detail. The nurse will be expected to provide preoperative education to patients. Experience in phlebotomy, medication reconciliation, obtaining EKGs, and reviewing lab values is essential. Candidates should be comfortable working with a range of patient age groups.
