Irrigation Technician

$27.59 - $36.62 per hour

Relocation: This position is located in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Relocation assistance is not provided. Job Summary The purpose of this position is to perform highly skilled work involved in the maintenance and repair of a variety of irrigation systems to assure Village parks, landscape areas, open spaces, rights-of-way, and trails are safe, available, clean, functional, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally well‑maintained. The position also participates in snow and ice control activities, operates light to heavy construction equipment, and directs a crew of seasonal workers in the performance of varied duties. As a municipal organization, Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees’ specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee. The following are illustrative of the expectations of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. The Village retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential and additional functions of the job at any time without notice. Essential Functions Perform a variety of physically demanding work for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions including extreme heat and / or cold. Perform heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motion including standing, walking, manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning, bending, stopping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, and reaching for objects. Primary Duties/Responsibilities 1. Irrigation Systems a. Performs technical skills related to troubleshooting and maintaining a variety of irrigation systems throughout the Village including parks, open spaces, municipal buildings, streetscapes, greenbelts, native areas, and sports fields; adheres to all safety policies and practices. b. Inspects irrigation systems to determine adequacy of coverage area; identifies nature of system breaks; determines necessary adjustments or repairs; implements corrective measures. c. Ensures timers on irrigation systems are adjusted including making wiring and other repairs on timing mechanisms; assists with the programming of irrigation schedules and run times to obtain maximum water efficiency. d. Installs and repairs irrigation pipe from ½” to 12” in diameter using techniques such as: solvent welding PVC, sweating copper, using gasket fittings, or fusing HDPE pipe. e. Possesses a working knowledge of pumping stations and large commercial or municipal irrigation systems. f. Reads and revises irrigation construction drawings, including written specifications and detail drawings; creates or modifies as‑built electronic files. g. Uses a variety of technical tools, such as: wire tracing, toning, and sonde locating, wire fault location equipment, multi‑meter, remote field zone activation (Eicon or cloud based), lake level, rain and soil moisture sensors, mechanical joint repair fittings, soil moisture meter (FieldScout TDR 300), master valve (Bermad & Netafim) operation and maintenance, weather station and sensor suite, endoscope and app based controls, and cloud based water flow meters. h. Performs annual testing of systems, plans for and schedules necessary repairs and replacement of system, as necessary. i. Performs proper winterization practices, including draining of backflow assembly and blowing out irrigation components with compressed air. j. Installs, inspects, identifies, and approves new irrigation systems, coordinates with supervisor. k. Coordinates with other team members to ensure no disruption to other parks activities. l. Performs physically arduous work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions. m. Responds to and performs after‑hours calls for service and emergency repair; works various shifts, as required, to provide necessary coverage, including responding to irrigation related items requiring immediate attention outside of regular hours. n. Operates centrally controlled irrigation software and hardware such as: Rain Bird, Maxicom, and IQ products, Baseline’s AppManager, and Weathermatic Smartlink. o. Uses proper trenching and shoring methods and arranges for utility locates, as required, for large excavations. p. Works in confined spaces. such as irrigation vaults in accordance with industry standards. 2. Data Collection and Reporting a. Gathers and provides data to respond to and resolve service requests; provides information and reports to supervisor and management, as necessary. b. Collects and maintains data on irrigation equipment; maintains necessary logs; maintains records of all maintenance performed on equipment. c. Utilizes CityWorks, GIS/GPS, AutoCad, etc. for updating and maintaining information. 3. Landscape Maintenance a. Provides assistance with a variety of parks and open space maintenance duties including, but not limited to, grass and weed mowing and trimming, power raking, and fertilizing; tree and flower bed planting, watering, and maintenance; aeration; application of pesticides for weed eradication; sprinkler irrigation; picking up trash; installs landscaping items such as steel edging, tie walls, bark, and trees and shrubs; chemical application on turf areas, trees, shrubs, open space, natural areas, and shrub and mulched beds; installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces park amenities. b. Operates light to heavy equipment, various hand and power tools and equipment; and other machines to perform assigned duties. 4. Snow and Ice Control a. Installs plow, sander, and other equipment on trucks; operates light duty snowplow trucks, ATVs, UTVs, sanders, and other related snow removal equipment such as a snow blower or shovels on an assigned shift. b. Loads sand in trucks using front‑end loader and uses front‑end loader to remove snow. c. Operates a single or double‑axle dump truck, which requires a class B CDL, to remove snow and apply sand. d. Works various shifts, as required, to provide necessary coverage; remains on call to respond to weather conditions requiring immediate response. 5. Lead Responsibilities a. Leads, oversees, and participates in the work of the assigned crew of maintenance staff; reviews work to ensure proper work methods and techniques. b. Collaborates with assigned supervisor to determine priorities and objectives; reviews established work schedules for assigned crew. c. Coordinates staff and equipment usage; identifies equipment and material needs; collaborates with other staff and contractors as appropriate. d. Maintains records on equipment and material used, reviews information with assigned lead and supervisory staff. e. Verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specification. f. Ensures adherence to standard safety precautions and practices. g. Trains employees in proper work and safety methods. 6. Miscellaneous Duties a. Communicates and interacts with members of the public; responds to customer service requests. b. Follows safety measures adhering to the Village’s safety policies and procedures; maintains and utilizes provided personal protective equipment (PPE) when conducting activities exposing employee to risks. c. Assists in special projects, including set up and take down for special events; building construction; participating in annual clean up programs, etc. d. Performs minor maintenance on equipment and/or vehicles. e. Cleans and maintains maintenance shop, tools, workspace, equipment, etc. f. Maintains inventory of parts and supplies; replenishes supplies when necessary, according to Village purchasing policies. g. Performs trash and recycling removal duties at all parks, native areas, and roadside areas throughout the Village. h. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. i. Primary internal contact is with own or other maintenance crews for purposes of completing assignments. Primary external contacts are with equipment or material suppliers and citizens. Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge of 1. Knowledge Of a. General practices applied in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems. b. Knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials used in area of irrigation systems. c. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. d. Operations and activities of a park maintenance program. e. Methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining irrigation systems in parks and open spaces. f. Laws, regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to the operations of trenching and shoring. 2. Ability To a. Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, including various hand and power tools and light and heavy‑dut​y equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation. b. Lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff. c. Interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures. d. Perform work along high‑volume roadways. e. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. f. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. g. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. h. Perform irrigation maintenance and repair work. i. Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, including various hand and power tools and light and heavy equipment, in a safe and effective manner. j. Use independent thought and decision making. k. Prioritize items needing attention. l. Coordinate work site operations for efficiency and safety. m. Recognize hazards. n. Work independently in the absence of supervision. o. Be available for work after scheduled hours on weekdays or weekends on a rotating basis with other crewmembers. Preferred Qualifications 1. Competent Person in Trenching and Shoring 2. Rain Bird Maxicom Operator 3. Weathermatic SmartLink Certification 4. Baseline Basic and Advanced Courses 5. Baseline Fundamentals 6. Confined Space Entry Courses Education and Experience Requirements Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to qualify.

  1. Four years of landscape maintenance experience including a minimum of two years of experience in landscape irrigation or equivalent hydraulics with proficiency in constructing, maintaining, and repairing commercial or municipal irrigation/hydraulic systems.
  2. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  3. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 180 days, an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier.
  4. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one-year, one of the following Certifications through the Irrigation Association: a. Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT). b. Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA).
  5. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one-year, a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) through the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA).
Supervisory Responsibilities Receives general supervision from the Parks Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over maintenance workers or seasonal workers. Working Conditions Requires the capability to operate a wide variety of equipment used in the parks construction and maintenance including trenchers, backhoes, front‑end loader, tractor, skid steer, forklift, track hoe, compactor, blowers, sprayers, air compressor, portable generators, pick‑up truck, single and double‑axle truck, snow blowers, and hand tools. Frequently exposed to safety hazards from equipment operated, manual labor, and work in high traffic areas. This position may involve working a variety of schedules, including evenings and weekends and may be subject to work beyond normal scheduled hours including emergency calls resulting from being called out for emergency situations creating dangerous conditions for the community.
