Summary & Purpose of the Position
The Director, Medical Affairs, leads and oversees key Medical Affairs activities in alignment with the U.S. and Global Rare Disease strategy for Pediatric Cholestatic Rare Disease. The role may also support Adult Cholestatic Rare Disease populations as needed and serves as the primary medical and scientific leader for the therapeutic area, guiding internal and external stakeholders and ensuring alignment across cross‑functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Medical Strategic Team activities.
- Plan and execute advisory boards (national and regional).
- Collaborate cross‑functionally to integrate medical strategies.
- Oversee medical information responses in collaboration with Medical Information.
- Manage scientific communications, including publications and congress presentations in partnership with the Publication team.
- Design and provide medical oversight of U.S. based clinical studies.
- Review and approve promotional and medical materials and educational grants.
- Work closely with the MSL team to guide field medical strategy, develop and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, and incorporate field insights into planning.
- Assess investigator‑sponsored study requests.
- Support internal and external training through knowledge transfer.
- Ensure accurate, timely responses to medical information requests.
- Contribute to planning and budget oversight of medical activities for pediatric cholestatic diseases and adult cholestatic populations as needed.
- Review and approve promotional and medical materials (PRC and MRC) as applicable.
- Identify needs and provide directions on the development of proactive and reactive field medical materials (e.g., FAQs, medical objection handlers, advisory board content).
- Oversee the Rare Disease KOL identification strategy and process.
- Lead medical congress strategy and execution, including scientific exchange and congress coverage.
- Oversee clinical grants and medical education funding activities with medical input and budget management.
- Manage travel and expense budget in line with company guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Key internal partners include U.S. and Global Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, the Rare Disease commercial team, and global Rare Disease franchise medical personnel.
Technical Competencies
- 8+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including 5–8 years in Medical Affairs strategy.
- Significant experience in Rare Disease; experience in Liver or Gastroenterology, including cholestatic diseases across pediatric and adult populations, is an asset.
- Knowledge of clinical trial design and biostatistics.
- Experience presenting and publishing scientific information.
- Ability to work across multiple functions & cultures and embrace team diversity.
- Enterprise and strategic mindset with the ability to identify & create solutions to various scenarios.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, presentation, and coaching skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Experience with organizational skills & business planning.
- Proven project management, tracking, and reporting of outcomes.
- Strong reasoning and creative solution skills.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. PhRMA, OIG, FDA rules, regulations, and guidelines related to compliant medical engagements.
- Proven ability to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment with a high level of autonomy.
- Ability to travel up to 40% of the time for HCP/customer meetings and scientific conferences.
Education & Certifications (Essential)
Advanced degree in a scientific discipline (MD, PhD, or PharmD).
Language(s) (Essential)
Fluent in English.
Preferred
- Clinical trials/research experience.
Compensation & Benefits
Base salary range: $225,000–$300,000. Eligible for short‑term and long‑term incentive programs.
