Employment Status and Shift Full time Shift: Weekends Only (United States of America) Location Facility: 2017 S Jefferson St - Roanoke Job Title and Requisition Requisition Number: R160986 — PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN (Open) Sign-on Bonus Sign on Bonus Eligible: $5,000 per applicable guidelines (external hires only) Responsibilities Ensure the safety of adults and children with mental illness on the acute psychiatric hospital unit. Deliver patient care and provide assistance with activities of daily living. Provide secretarial support and lead daily goals/wrap up groups. Direct and lead code‑secure activities with staff and security. Actively participate in all unit activities, reporting observations and information while maintaining a safe therapeutic milieu. Observe patients and report any unusual circumstances to the licensed nurse. Organize, prioritize, and assist with nursing care per unit standards, including admission/discharge processes and documentation via EMR. Greet admissions, make them comfortable, orient to unit routines and safety precautions within 15 minutes of arrival. Promptly answer call lights and telephones, meeting basic patient needs for assigned and non‑assigned patients. Conduct patient safety rounds every 15 minutes or per unit policy. Assist patients with meeting nutritional needs and perform delegated treatments such as EKGs, blood glucose testing, I&O, enemas, etc. Advocate for patients, protect their rights, and provide psychological, social, and cultural support. Use system resources to meet patients' cultural and disability needs. Provide patients and families with appropriate information and care in a timely manner. Report to licensed nursing staff any issues or concerns voiced or written in groups. Manage patients with potential for aggressive or combative behavior toward themselves or others. Assist nursing staff with escalating patients and possess strong communication skills for escalating situations. Participate in quality management and Carilion Clinic performance improvement activities. Contribute to cost containment measures at the unit level—properly charge supplies, remove and clean discontinued equipment, and use resources in a cost‑effective manner. Perform clerical duties under supervision of licensed nursing staff. Qualifications High school graduate or GED required. Completion of de‑escalation training within 4 months of hire, and ongoing maintenance thereafter. Must obtain AHA BLS‑HCP certification. Valid Virginia State Driver’s license required for transporting patients. Experience or ability to manage patients with explosive potential and/or escalating situations. Ability to function with minimal supervision and recognize the need for direction in situations beyond scope. Ability to learn and participate as a team member.
