Security Officer

Job Description:

The Unarmed Security Officer provides professional, customer-focused security services that protect people, property, and client operations in Michigan City, Indiana. This role maintains a visible and vigilant presence; helps deter unauthorized activity; responds appropriately to incidents and emergencies; and enforces site policies with professionalism, sound judgment, and respect.

The Officer will perform regular patrols, monitor security systems, control access, document incidents accurately, and work cooperatively with site management, visitors, employees, law enforcement, fire personnel, and emergency medical responders when needed. This is an unarmed position and does not include law-enforcement or arrest authority.
Job Duties:

• Protect people, property, equipment, and facilities through an attentive, professional security presence.
• Conduct scheduled and random foot and/or vehicle patrols of assigned buildings, parking areas, perimeter areas, and other designated locations.
• Observe and report suspicious, unsafe, unauthorized, or criminal activity according to company and client procedures.
• Monitor CCTV cameras, alarm systems, access-control systems, radios, and other security equipment; promptly report malfunctions or irregularities.
• Inspect doors, windows, gates, fences, emergency exits, access points, and other areas to verify that the site is secure.
• Control access to the property by verifying identification, monitoring visitor entry, issuing visitor credentials when applicable, and enforcing site-specific entry procedures.
• Respond promptly and calmly to requests for assistance, alarms, disturbances, accidents, medical incidents, fire-related concerns, and other emergencies within the scope of training.
• Investigate disturbances and security concerns, preserve relevant observations or evidence when appropriate, and immediately notify supervision or emergency services as required.
• Contact and coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and other responders when circumstances require.
• Write clear, complete, timely, and accurate daily activity reports, incident reports, patrol logs, and shift pass-down information.
• Enforce client policies, post orders, safety procedures, and rules in a fair, consistent, and professional manner.
• Provide exceptional customer service by assisting visitors, employees, residents, vendors, and clients with directions, general information, escorts, and routine concerns.
• Maintain reliable communication with supervisors and fellow officers through radio, telephone, email, reporting systems, and shift briefings.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding client operations, incidents, personnel, access procedures, and security information.
• Attend and successfully complete required orientation, post-order training, emergency-response training, and ongoing company training.
• Follow all company policies and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including requirements applicable to Indiana security guard agencies regulated through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA).
• Perform other security-related duties assigned by supervisors or management.

Job Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age .
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation and meet company/client screening requirements.
• Reliable transportation and the ability to report consistently and punctually to assigned sites in or near Michigan City, Indiana.
• Ability to stand, walk, patrol, climb stairs, and remain alert for extended periods of time.
• Strong observation, situational-awareness, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to prepare detailed, objective, and grammatically clear incident reports and daily activity logs.
• Ability to remain calm, courteous, and decisive during stressful, rapidly changing, or emergency situations.
• Ability to work independently while following post orders, company procedures, and supervisory direction.
• Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.
• Ability to use or learn basic security technology, including CCTV monitoring, alarm panels, access-control systems, radios, smartphones, and electronic reporting platforms.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior security, customer service, loss-prevention, military, corrections, public safety, hospitality, industrial, warehouse, healthcare, or law-enforcement support experience.
• Experience conducting foot or vehicle patrols and access-control duties.
• Previous experience monitoring surveillance cameras, alarms, and visitor-management systems.
• Current CPR, First Aid, AED, or emergency-response certification.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for positions requiring vehicle patrol.
• Familiarity with de-escalation, incident documentation, workplace violence prevention, and emergency evacuation procedures.

Physical and Work Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for long periods, potentially for the majority of a shift.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
• Ability to patrol uneven surfaces, use stairs, and respond quickly to incidents throughout the assigned property.
• Ability to lift, carry, or move items up to a reasonable weight as required by post duties.
• Ability to maintain focus while monitoring video feeds, access points, and surrounding activity for extended periods.
• Ability to work in environments that may include noise, vehicle traffic, crowds, industrial activity, construction activity, or public interaction.

Licensing and Compliance Notice

This role is an unarmed security officer position. Applicants are not required to possess an individual Indiana security-guard license merely to work for a licensed security guard agency; Indiana law allows a licensed agency to employ unlicensed personnel and places responsibility for employees' conduct on the agency. The employer will complete all required onboarding, employee-record, fingerprinting, background-screening, and site-specific training processes.

Indiana's PLA regulates private investigator firms and security guard agencies. The agency-not the individual unarmed officer-must satisfy the applicable licensure requirements, which include agency-level background, insurance, experience/education, and other application requirements.

Security officers in this position are expected to observe, deter, document, report, and contact appropriate emergency responders when needed. They must not represent themselves as law enforcement, and the position does not independently confer arrest authority or authorization to carry a weapon.
