The Opportunity
The Background Check Specialist / HR supports the background investigation and suitability determination process for FSA’s foster care program, coordinating and documenting required background check requests and results and conducting quality assurance to ensure checks are submitted completely, accurately, and within required timeframes.
Please note: This is a grant-funded, term-limited position for up to three years. Continuation is contingent on grant funding.
What You Will Own
Coordinate and document required background investigations — FBI fingerprint, state repository, child abuse and neglect, and sex offender registry checks — for all staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers prior to direct contact with children.
Conduct quality assurance reviews to ensure background checks are complete, accurate, and submitted within required timeframes.
Support the staff suitability determination process and maintain results in personnel files.
Support HR functions including onboarding, credentialing, I-9/employment eligibility, immunization documentation, and personnel-file maintenance.
Document applicants’ prior work at other child welfare organizations as required.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent degree.
Minimum of three (3) years of employment experience.
Base technical skills in Microsoft applications including Excel, Word, and Smartsheets.
Good communication and project management skills.
Employment is contingent on successful completion of all required background checks and credentialing.
Preferred Qualifications
Background-check or HR compliance experience in child welfare.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Experience with suitability determinations and CARF HR standards.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $40,800 – $48,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include group health, dental, and vision insurance; employer-paid basic life insurance (coverage begins after the eligibility period); paid time off and paid federal holidays; professional development; GSA-rate mileage reimbursement; and workers’ compensation per N.C.G.S. § 97-2.
