Transportation Technician/Bus Mechanic

Alleghany County Schools – Transportation Technician/Bus Mechanic (Sparta, North Carolina) Starting Date: July 1, 2026 Department: Transportation/Bus Garage Reports To: Transportation Director Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent (40 hours/week, 12 months per year) Responsibilities Diagnose and resolve minor and frequent mechanical problems on school and activity buses, fleet vehicles. Rotate, align, and balance wheels; install shock absorbers. Repair and replace damaged vehicle body parts, doors, lifts, and other components. Test electrical systems and perform necessary repairs, including carburetors, ignition systems, and other electrical components. Remove, replace, and reassemble transmissions, clutches, fuel, oil, and water pumps, generators, and other engine and suspension parts. Perform general maintenance as needed. Operate equipment and machinery such as trucks, wreckers, tire‑changing machines, hydraulic lifts, etc. Lift and carry weights up to 100 pounds. Maintain rigorous safety standards and complete yearly inspections and preventative maintenance schedules. Assist in driving a bus during mornings or afternoons if substitute drivers are unavailable. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications & Skills Considerable knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance. Understanding of internal combustion engine principles, electrical and generating system maintenance. Manual dexterity for engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and complete tasks independently. Physical capability to perform most repairs and operate heavy equipment. Strong communication skills and a positive disposition toward working with staff, parents, and students. Graduation from high school and 1–2 years of automotive repair and maintenance experience or equivalent training. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with P & S endorsement (or willingness to obtain).
