Tennis Coach

New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) has honored Arthur Ashe's legacy for over fifty years with free tennis and academic programs for NYC kids. We are the largest provider of youth tennis and education programs in the nation, with 100 sites across all five boroughs reaching nearly 90,000 kids. Our mission is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court.

Schedule: Part time, Monday - Friday, 2:00pm - 6:00pm

Pay: $20.00 - $27.25 per hour, determined based on skill

The role

Facilitate the successful day-to-day operation of the tennis program at your assigned site, supervise youth, and manage the administrative and physical aspects of tennis lessons, coaching, drills, tournaments and game play.

Responsibilities

- Adhere to a positive coaching philosophy, motivating participants through encouragement and praise

- Model polite, courteous and respectful behavior with program participants and staff

- Lead teaching and practice programs Monday to Friday

- Facilitate and supervise matches, recording and reporting scores and results

- Manage court setup and breakdown, ensuring cleanliness and safety

- Maintain programmatic records, including participation and performance

- Assess participants' tennis skills and make student referrals to other NYJTL tennis programs as appropriate

- May supervise other coaches at the site

- Ensure that instruction and games are safe, well organized and fun

- Attend required meetings and staff development workshops

- Assist with the orderly operation of the program, including supervising children during snack/supper, facilitating dismissal, conducting field trips and hosting special events

- Perform other duties and special projects as requested by management

Qualifications

- High school degree or equivalent

- One or more years of teaching tennis and working in school programs

- Previous tennis coach experience

- At least one year of previous experience working with children in a similar setting

- Completion of NYJTL or similar tennis coaching seminars

- Knowledge of USTA 10 and Under tennis using the QuickStart format

- Successful completion of a pre-employment basic tennis skills assessment

- Player experience as a junior, college or adult player preferred
