Silviculturist Project Manager

Job Summary The Silviculturist Project Manager provides program-level leadership and technical expertise for silviculture and vegetation management activities supporting a federal agency for disaster recovery, restoration, and resiliency efforts. This role oversees planning, budgeting, environmental compliance, and implementation of forest management programs, ensuring alignment with agency objectives and regulatory requirements.

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite)
Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina)
Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options.

Duties/Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the silviculture program, including reforestation, timber stand improvement, and vegetation management
- Develop policies, technical guides, and standards for silvicultural treatments (site prep, planting, thinning, prescribed fire)
- Oversee program budgets, funding allocations, and annual work plans
- Coordinate with federal agency staff, partners, and contractors on project planning and execution
- Develop and review silvicultural prescriptions and ensure integration of multiple resource objectives
- Prepare and review NEPA documentation and support environmental compliance processes
- Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of silviculture and vegetation management programs through field inspections
- Provide technical oversight for timber harvest, stand treatments, and vegetation management activities
- Support development of long-range vegetation management plans and Forest Plan integration
- Review project plans, restoration strategies, and timber sale planning for compliance and effectiveness
- Coordinate insect, disease, and animal damage control programs related to vegetation management
- Participate in interdisciplinary teams for environmental planning and decision-making
- Track program performance and provide reports, updates, and recommendations
- Ensure compliance with federal agency policies, procedures, and land management objectives

- Advanced knowledge of silviculture, forestry practices, and vegetation management
- Experience with NEPA compliance and environmental analysis
- Ability to lead programs, manage budgets, and coordinate interdisciplinary teams
- Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills
- Experience managing silviculture or forestry programs for federal land management agencies
- Familiarity with Eastern hardwood or Southern Appalachian forest ecosystems
- Experience developing silvicultural prescriptions integrating multiple resource objectives
- Experience with GIS tools and forest inventory/data systems
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Forestry or related field
- Required: Minimum 10 years of experience in forestry or silviculture
- Required: Certification of Silviculturist upon placement OR attain certification within one year of that date
- Required: Experience in vegetation management, timber planning, and environmental compliance
- Preferred: Advanced degree in forestry or related discipline
- Preferred: Experience with federal land management agencies, particularly U.S. Forest Service
- Ability to conduct field visits in forested and rugged terrain
- Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods
- Ability to work in extreme weather, noise, dust, and field conditions
