Definition

The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant-EFDA performs basic dental duties, assists the dentist with 4-handed dentistry, and is intimately knowledgeable of all aspects of the Little Light Dentistry practice, and the services provided. This position is scheduled to work 32 hours per week, with office hours, Monday-Thursday from 8:00 am- 5:00 pm, and one hour for lunch each working day.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Board of Dentistry-approved dental assisting school or equivalent

• Must possess a current Florida dental radiography certification

• Must possess a current CPR certification

• Compliance with state dental practice requirements (e.g., X-ray requirements, OSHA training)

• Minimum of one year of experience in a pediatric dental practice preferred

• Computer skills (Dentrix, Microsoft/Outlook)

• Maintain required Continuing Education Credits per Florida credentialing standards

• HIPPA trained and have sufficient knowledge of all laws and regulatory requirements

• Strong written, and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills

• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people

• Demonstrate a strong passion for the mission of providing dentistry to uninsured, low-income children, idealism, integrity, a positive attitude, and self-direction

• Provide documentation that he/she has received at least the first shot for Hepatitis B upon hire with the completion of the series of the Hepatitis B immunization within six (6) months from his/her date of employment or his/her first shot, which occurs first, or sign the declination form

• Hire contingent upon satisfactory completion of a Level II background check

• Bi-Lingual: English/Spanish preferred.

• Greet patients when they sign in and monitor their arrival time

• Set up dental operatory for procedures

• Escort and seat patients in the dental operatory

• Show care and concern, and help patients feel comfortable

• Obtain and review health histories according to practice protocol

• Ensure that patients are always attended

Key Results Area

• Anticipate and assist the Dentist’s needs in all areas of 4-handed dentistry

• Perform expanded functions and other tasks as assigned by the Dentist

• Chart patients and record date, and services rendered

• Ensure proper treatment notes are recorded in the patient's chart

• Perform clinical procedures as practice act allows and as directed by the Dentist

• Monitor patient flow to ensure a smooth daily schedule

• Notify the Patient Coordinator if a patient should be called in the evening after a difficult appointment

• Monitor inventory and submit monthly supply list for Dentist approval

• Demonstrates compliance with HIPPA, OSHA, and all regulatory requirements

• Ensure the dental operatories are ready, stocked, cleaned, and disinfected per OSHA regulations before each appointment

• Maintain the organization of trays, instruments, and treatment room drawers

• Ensure that the office sterilization procedures document is on display

• Implement the preventive maintenance/cleaning schedule for all dental equipment

• Maintain dental office emergency kits and adequate supplies of nitrous oxide and oxygen

Electronic Records Management in Dentrix

• Securely store and manage patient records in compliance with state and federal requirements, including the HIPAA privacy and security regulation

• Accurately enter patient information at the end of each day

• Track cases and referrals to and from other doctors

Interpersonal

• Help in other areas of the office when necessary (answering phones, ordering/unpacking supplies)

• Participate in team meetings

• Demonstrates a high level of professionalism

• Other duties as assigned
