Radiation Therapist

Overview Vistant (formerly PMCG) is a public‑sector management consulting firm serving federal international development, healthcare, and social services agencies. Under the supervision of the Vistant Program Manager, the Radiation Therapist will support the mission of the Department of Radiology/Oncology Services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) on the DHA JPC Contract. Responsibilities Receive patients, explain procedures, and answer questions. Provide physical and emotional comfort, alleviating fear and insecurity. Instruct patients on maintaining correct positioning. Set treatment parameters on the linear accelerator (field sizes, monitor units, table positions, distance, etc.) based on the treatment plan. Confirm patient position, port film, and signed consent before initial treatment. Adjust patient positioning as needed. Recognize and report physical symptoms to the Radiation Oncologist. Observe equipment for proper operation, detect malfunctions, and report to the therapy physicist. Deliver planned radiation therapy courses (e.g., 3D therapy). Verify prescriptions against treatment plans, ensuring accurate monitor units and documentation. Maintain accurate Records and Verify system entries: monitor units, wedges, blocks, etc., and document technical details. Utilize collimator, equipment locks, mechanical tables, Kodak film, and screen systems; demonstrate knowledge of radiation protection standards. Adhere to safe practices for emergency procedures, hazardous material handling, and physical security. Apply knowledge of accumulated radiation dose effects, anatomy and physiology, and radiation physics concepts in clinical settings. Fabricate blocks and configure MLC for treatment units such as Varian Trilogy, Varian Truebeam, Exactrac, Tomotherapy HiART, and Respiratory Gating hardware. Experience Must possess knowledge in radiation therapy technology and familiarity with technique charts, routine and all therapy treatment methods, state‑of‑the‑art simulators, and linear accelerators. Minimum acceptable experience: At least 12 consecutive months within the last five years personally delivering an average of eight IMRT treatments per day. OR at least 12 consecutive months within the last five years personally delivering an average of three SRS treatments per month. Education Completion of a program of formal education recommended by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiation Therapy Technologist, approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA); program length of 24 months or equivalent (Associate Degree). Certifications Current American Registry of Radiologic Therapy Technologist (ARRT) certification in the United States. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Current Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Required Skills Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English. Knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology, able to identify and use necessary equipment properly. Skilled in teaching patients self‑care and motivating family members. Competent in age‑related patient care for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. Knowledge of a broad range of medical disorders, diagnostic studies, and treatments related to prevention and detection of illnesses. Familiarity with professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures. Proficient in basic computer operations: word processing, data entry, and automated medical records. Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, changing growth environment. Customer‑service oriented toward external and internal customers. Unwavering professional integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Security Clearance Requirements Required as stipulated by contract. U.S. citizenship is required. Place of Performance Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Travel Requirements Limited to no travel required.
