Our organization is currently looking to recruit up to two full-time faculty members to become part of the Advanced Heart Failure - Cardiac Transplant Team. The positions are available at the levels of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Child Health. This program conducts approximately 12-15 heart transplants each year, manages heart failure patients in both inpatient and outpatient environments, and oversees a mechanical circulatory support initiative that includes a comprehensive range of pediatric and adult devices. The selected candidates will collaborate with our heart transplant team, which comprises three physicians, five nurse practitioner transplant coordinators, a dedicated VAD coordinator, and interdisciplinary professionals in nutrition, pharmacy, social work, and child psychology.

Applicants must possess an M.D. or an equivalent degree, be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, and be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona. Candidates should have completed a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology, along with an additional year of advanced subspecialty training focused on pediatric advanced heart failure, including the management of cardiac transplant patients and mechanical circulatory support.

We seek candidates who exhibit a strong academic orientation, ideally in clinical and/or translational research, although opportunities in basic science are also available. Academic clinical faculty appointments will be facilitated through the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix and Tucson, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Scottsdale. There are also collaborative research opportunities with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (tGen) and the Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University.

Fellowship and Training

The Division of Cardiology currently offers a fellowship training program in general pediatric cardiology, accommodating nine fellows over three years. Additionally, the Phoenix Center for Heart Care provides subspecialty fellowships in pediatric cardiac critical care, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional cardiac catheterization. The inpatient service features a 48-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit and a transition care unit. Patient care is interdisciplinary, involving transplant cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and dedicated cardiac nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Providing both workplace-based and didactic instruction to fellows, residents, medical students, and nursing staff is a key expectation for this role.

The successful candidates will join a team of 24 cardiologists, 13 cardiac intensivists, three cardiovascular surgeons, and 25 advanced practice providers. Inpatient pediatric cardiac care is primarily conducted at our facility, while adult congenital inpatient care and procedures are also available at a nearby medical center. Ambulatory cardiac services for transplant and heart failure patients are centralized at the Center for Heart Care - Thomas Campus.

Position Responsibilities

• Patient Care Services:
  • Deliver patient care services for which the physician is clinically privileged, including but not limited to:
  • Direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Provide subspecialty consultations and follow-up care.
  • Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic services/procedures.
  • Offer urgent/emergent care services as necessary.
• Aim to provide the highest quality of patient and family-centered care.
• Support the hospital's patient satisfaction objectives and the division's specific targets.
• Adhere to divisional standards for patient safety and quality of care.
• Practice contemporary evidence-based medicine or the latest experience-based approaches.

Divisional Responsibilities

• Set and strive to meet annual goals and objectives for the physician, division, and hospital.
• Contribute to the medical education programs and activities of the division, including:
• Supervising trainees and allied health professionals in delivering inpatient and outpatient services when applicable.
• Conducting teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences for trainees.
• Participating in the education and supervision of trainees and allied health professionals assigned to the division.
• Engaging in postgraduate continuing education activities within the division.
• Support the division's research initiatives and those of other members.
• Encourage the programmatic growth of the division.
• Assist with satellite efforts of the division when appropriate.
