Human Resources Generalist

The Department of Transportation is seeking a Human Resources Support HR Generalist 1 to join the Human Resources Division in Hamilton County. Based in Chattanooga, TN, this hybrid role supports the Employee Engagement Section by helping plan, coordinate, and implement activities that reinforce strategic priorities and strengthen workplace culture. In this position, you will complete technical HR support tasks across routine transactions, employee relations support, and onboarding coordination, while maintaining accurate records and ensuring work products align with TDOT HR policies. Role Overview Support the Employee Engagement Section in planning, coordinating, and implementing programs that promote a positive workplace culture. Execute routine technical HR support functions, including routine HR transactions, onboarding processes, and employee relations activities. Responsibilities Prepare and process routine HR transactions, including advertisements, appointments, transfers, promotions, leave requests, and updates to employee data. Ensure HR entries are accurate and meet departmental and state recordkeeping requirements, coordinating with the Region HR Support Team to resolve discrepancies or issues. Support new hire activities by coordinating logistics, preparing orientation materials, gathering required documentation, and assisting with onboarding processes. Respond to standard employee inquiries related to HR policies, pay schedules, and basic benefits processes, escalating more complex or sensitive questions to senior staff when needed. Use HR systems and processes to monitor and maintain employee files, records, and logs in line with record retention standards. Assist with organizing and updating HR documents, onboarding checklists, and audit materials to support compliance and operational consistency. Coordinate recruitment logistics, including posting job vacancies on Tennessee and TDOT platforms, scheduling interviews, and organizing applicant documentation. Maintain detailed records for the candidate selection process and help route documentation for review and approval. Participate in reviews of HR support workflows, tools, and work products to improve consistency, accuracy, and compliance while aligning with TDOT HR policies and expectations. Support leave program administration by maintaining accurate records and documentation for FMLA, workers' compensation, and other qualifying leave events. Coordinate leave-related routing, tracking, and communication with team members. Assist with employee engagement programs by preparing communications, tracking participation, and coordinating logistics for activities, events, and campaigns. Contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture. Requirements Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Qualifying full-time professional or paraprofessional human resources experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years.
