Assistant County Attorney

Compensation Range $101,088.00 - $141,544.00 -- Job Description Summary Under the direction and supervision of the County Attorney, the Assistant County Attorney provides legal representation for Weld County in civil and regulatory matters. This role is well suited for attorneys seeking consistent courtroom exposure, predictable dockets, and an opportunity to build a broad civil practice in a supportive, collaborative environment. Primary responsibilities include managing several established court dockets—specifically mental health proceedings, zoning and land use violation matters, and dog at large cases—as well as assisting with Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) responses and document review. This position offers meaningful professional development and the chance to expand responsibilities over time. As the attorney becomes familiar with Weld County's structure, departments, and legal needs, opportunities may include providing legal counsel to County departments, elected officials, and boards and participating in broader civil practice areas. Courtroom & Administrative Representation 65% Manage well established dockets in civil and regulatory matters, including mental health hearings, land use and zoning violations, and dog at large citations. Appear in administrative hearings on behalf of County departments involving matters such as assistant payment collection, unemployment claims, and property tax appeals. Conduct legal research and analyze statutes, case law, regulations, and other relevant authorities. Communicate and collaborate with individuals, agencies, and external parties involved in County legal matters. Legal Support & Document Preparation 30% Assist with Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) requests through structured review, redaction, and document preparation. Draft and review legal documents such as pleadings, motions, briefs, contracts, leases, and other materials as assigned, with opportunities to refine and expand drafting skills. Support the development and refinement of administrative procedures and legal guidance documents for County departments. Attend or observe meetings of the Board of County Commissioners as assigned to gain familiarity with County governance, with the opportunity to assume advisory responsibilities as experience increases. Other Duties as Assigned 5% Perform job related duties as assigned by the County Attorney or Deputy County Attorney. Follow policies, procedures, and the Weld County Code of Conduct. Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to guidelines regarding appropriate release of information. Required Qualifications Required Education: Graduation from an ABA accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (J.D. or equivalent). Experience Qualifications: Experience practicing law, such as internships, clerkships, clinics, or professional work involving civil matters or government settings as a minimum requirement. Preferred Experience One to three years of experience practicing civil law or representing government agencies. Experience in litigation, administrative hearings, mediation, or dispute resolution. Experience reviewing documents or handling CORA or other public records processes. Skills & Abilities Candidate must possess strong legal research and writing skills. Candidate must possess sufficient computer skills to perform essential job functions. Candidate must possess the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the client, fellow employees and colleagues, opposing counsel, and the court. Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date. Licenses & Certifications Passed the Colorado State Bar Exam and able to practice law in Weld County. Admission to the Colorado State Bar and member in good standing. Driving Driving is essential in this position. Candidate must have a valid Driver’s License and Liability Insurance. Driving & On-hire Requirements Candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation and if hired, will be subject to continuous monthly MVR monitoring and random drug screens throughout employment. Required Pre-Employment Substance Screening This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening.
