Hydrologist I or II
The Hydrologist I or II position supports permitting and water resource management activities by assisting with field data collection, permit application review, data entry, and technical documentation under the guidance of senior staff. The role focuses on developing foundational hydrologic skills while supporting District programs through accurate data management, public assistance, and timely completion of assigned tasks.
Job Duties Include:
- Assist Water Use Permittees with implementing statutory requirements for Remote Irrigation Management and Reporting.
- Collect, enter and perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of water usage data provided by Water Use Permittees, and assist District Staff with analyzing the water use data.
- Assist District staff with assigned project tasks to support resource management activities within statutory timeframes.
- Collect and document field data, including the use of District GPS equipment.
- Support senior hydrologists and engineers by completing assigned technical and administrative tasks.
- Assist senior hydrologists and engineers with site visits and field inspections.
- Assist in the administrative and basic technical review of permit applications and supporting documents.
- Draft portions of technical memoranda, summaries, and reports for review by senior staff.
- Prepare maps, figures, and exhibits using GIS and other District tools, as assigned.
- Enter and maintain accurate records of permit actions, inspections, and public interactions in the Districts electronic regulatory system.
- Respond to routine public inquiries related to permit status, application processes, and online systems, with support from senior staff as needed.
- Assist with gathering, organizing, and summarizing hydrologic and hydrogeologic data for District projects.
- Support compliance activities by assisting with documentation and field observations; this position does not perform enforcement actions.
- Assist with preapplication meetings by compiling information and supporting senior staff.
- Support water supply planning, minimum flows and levels, and other offices through data collection and assigned tasks.
- Ensure assigned tasks, documentation, and data entry are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition to the above listed duties, a Hydrologist II will be responsible for:
- Complete assigned project tasks to support resource management activities within statutory timeframes.
- Perform site visits, field inspections, and preapplication meetings.
- Perform basic technical review of permit applications and supporting documents.
- Prepare compliance correspondence and assist in compliance/enforcement meetings by compiling information and supporting senior staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
Hydrologist I -
- Bachelors Degree in hydrologic and related physical sciences; or civil, hydraulic, environmental, agricultural, or water resources engineering; or
- Associates Degree with a transcript supporting course work in the above-mentioned fields, plus one (1) year of regulatory work experience and two (2) years of customer service work experience.
- Regulatory work experience of at least one (1) year, or two (2) years of customer service work experience preferred.
- Experience in water resource management, groundwater modeling, HEC-RAS, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or statistical programs preferred.
- Valid drivers license.
In addition to the above minimum qualifications, a Hydrologist II must have:
- Minimum of two (2) years related experience.
- Geologist-in-Training (GIT) certification, or Engineering Intern (E.I.) certification in civil, hydraulic, environmental, agricultural, or water resources may substitute for one (1) year of required experience.
- Masters Degree preferred; may substitute for one (1) year of required experience.
