The Role and Why It's Important

At Hy-Vee, our floral department helps customers celebrate life's most meaningful moments, and the Floral Assistant Department Manager plays a key role in making every interaction special. In this role, you'll partner with the Floral Department Manager to lead the team, maintain department standards, and ensure every customer walks away with exactly what they need. From creating arrangements and processing floral orders to training clerks and designers and stepping in to manage the department when needed, your contributions make a lasting impression.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

• Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer warmly, counseling them on plant and floral care, taking special requests, and creating arrangements to their specifications
  
• Check orders for the day, set up a timeline and production schedule, and ensure all customer orders are fulfilled completely and on time
  
• Oversee floral designers and clerks by outlining duties, providing training including simple designs and phone order procedures, and following up to ensure tasks are completed
  
• Understand and process FTD, interstore, and Teleflora orders; maintain confidentiality on all orders placed including sender, recipient, order details, and cost
  
• Review the appearance of merchandise throughout the department and the store; inventory, replenish, and address damaged product
  
• Order flowers and supplies daily or as needed and receive deliveries, put product away, review invoices, and log in the record book
  
• Clean, process, and cut flowers appropriately and wrap with care to avoid damage
  
• Ensure the department is clean and neat including cases, shelves, and floors
  
• Identify key areas throughout the store to place specials and share ideas for arrangements for occasions such as weddings, funerals, and anniversaries
  
• Assist the manager with paperwork, scheduling, pricing, displays, promotions, and pre-orders
  
• Stay current on floral industry trends by reading industry references and remaining open to new ideas
  
• Assume management responsibilities in the absence of the Department Manager
  
• Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product orders
  
• Follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines
  
• Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

• Lead, train, and support floral designers and clerks in a fast-paced retail environment
  
• Solve practical problems and make sound decisions with a variety of variables and limited standardization
  
• Apply math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages in day-to-day tasks
  
• Demonstrate strong knowledge of floral products, care and handling, and plant and flower identification
  
• Communicate clearly with customers, team members, and vendors and provide direction and guidance
  
• Handle confidential information including ad items, sales and order records, and customer order details with discretion
  

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Floral Department Manager

Direct Reports: Floral Clerks, Floral Designers

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent experience; department training is helpful
  
• Over six months of similar or related experience preferred
  

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
  
• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
  
• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
  
• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
  
• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties
  

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. You'll work primarily in a store environment and can expect exposure to dirt, noise, dampness, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals and solvents. Holiday periods may require extended hours. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $15.00 to $18.75 depending on experience.
