POSITION SUMMARY:

Delivery of safe, efficient, quality patient/resident care through the use of the nursing process which consists of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation. Initiates, plans and participates in patient/resident and family education. Supervises and guides staff in the absence of the department leader and accepts responsibility for care given. Maintains the standards for professional nursing. Serves as the point person for the staff, Physician, patients, families and visitors. Works in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team, as well as with the patients/residents, families and visitors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Staff the oncoming shift and addresses changes in staffing needs as they occur as well as census fluctuation. Will document on the House Supervisor report sheet every shift and justify staffing decision to the department leader and CNO as requested. Represents administrative leadership and acts according to leadership standards, including but not limited to the safeguarding of confidential, privileged, or sensitive information. Assist with patient care in all areas, as required. Serve as administrative resource person to staff. Communicate pertinent information to on-coming house supervisor. Read and document in Supervisor’s Communication Book to assure passage of accurate and current information to all supervisors. “the Book of Knowledge.” Document details of potential disciplinary/behavior problems, staff sick calls, tardiness, absenteeism, and any other patient/resident/visitor unusual events or safety concerns in the Occurrence Reporting System. Assist nursing leadership with employee evaluations through input and anecdotal note documentation of both positive and negative observations. Act as nursing staff representative to physicians. Respond to all emergencies and resuscitation. Assume team leader responsibility during resuscitation unless primary nurse is already performing in that role. The house supervisor will function as leader during a Rapid Response Call. Evaluate quality of nursing care in all areas. LTC will be rounded on by the House supervisor 3 times per shift and documented on the shift report. Inpatients will be rounded on one time per shift prior to noon and Midnight, ensuring patient goals are updated on the patient white boards. House supervisor will round on the ED two times per shift. Oversee and coordinate admissions, transfers and discharges during the shift. Supervise staff in maintaining adequate drug records; initiate action to correct errors in the narcotic count. Perform narcotic count on Inpatient Services Unit each shift. Assume responsibility for staff performance during the shift. Will participate in simulation and any education drills. This will include but is not be limited to Mock Code Blue Drills, fire drills, and emergency preparedness drills. Serve as clinical resource person to staff. Be available and willing to teach as the need arises. Maintain current knowledge and adhere to PVHC Policies, Procedures, and behavior standards. Support administrative and nurse leader’s decisions and all practice changes. Will follow proper chain of command. Secondary Functions: The House Supervisor’s are responsible for calling the on-call OR team as notified, They will also call in any staff needed for trauma team activations and any necessary staff for Code Blue activations. Call in ancillary personnel and departments as necessary Administer safety policies and procedures as necessary. Assure infection control policies are observed. Must perform 2 hand hygiene audits per month and submit through the Speedy Audit app. Participate in the monthly outdate crash cart checks. Day shift House Supervisor will perform daily crash cart checks and document. Assist staff with written care plans and medical record documentation. Assume responsibility for supply management after hours; carry pharmacy and stock room keys. Participate in nurse management activities and in-services as required by nursing and hospital administration. Incident command leader until appropriate senior leader is available to take over command. Adhere to legal guidelines and hospital policy regarding release of information and evidence to law enforcement, media or the public. Participate in activities to promote PVHC in community health and education. Participate in in-service programs as both student and teacher. Attend workshops, as possible, and take responsibility for keeping own knowledge and skills up to date. Keep the 1:1 sitter list and assist with finding 1:1 coverage or assigning departments times; as well as assuring all Title 25 paperwork is complete correctly. Conducts Employee Urine drug screens for cause. Demonstrates competency in psychosocial and psychomotor aspects of nursing. Implements nursing actions by either direct care or delegation of that responsibility, based on level of acuity and individual patient need. Understands and reacts effectively to unique needs of patients whose age may range from premature infant to elderly adult. Implements the plan of care by provision of direct care or by delegation, based on the needs of the patient/resident, the functional or developmental age of the patient/resident, and by the competencies exhibited by the nurse. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, ADN required, BSN preferred. Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Wyoming. BLS, ACLS, NRP and PALS for Healthcare Provider. NRP-TNCC Preferred

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rate, ratio, and percent in order to accurately determine medication dosages and establish accurate intravenous rates. Knowledgeable in metric and appropriate measurements and can convert from one system to the other as needed. Competency in basic computer skills and willingness to learn and apply electronic applications. Work with confused or combative patients/residents. Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, memos and correspondence. Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization Speak and document clearly and concisely. Communicate effectively and professionally with members of the Health Care Team. Solve practical problems and work under the direction of the licensed nursing staff. Demonstrates an awareness of cost effective patient/resident care delivery.

Regularly lifting or move objects weighing 10 to 50 pounds Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, stooping, bending, crouching, and working with equipment. Subject to inside and possibly outside weather conditions.
