Job Summary Works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse while delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intra‑operative period. Provides technical care to the surgical patient through the role of the scrub assistant and interacts with patients of all ages and the health care team, maintaining surgical department standards. Responsibilities Maintain a sterile environment and practice aseptic technique throughout the operation. Don sterile gowns and gloves from a sterile area, ensuring clean boundaries between sterile and non‑sterile zones. Inspect sterile packages for integrity, expiration dates, and correct sorting prior to use. Identify and report any breaks in sterile technique to the Circulating RN. Select and check instrumentation based on the scheduled procedure; prepare the case cart with the physician’s preference card and confirm all jackets are buttoned. Ensure special supplies and instruments are available before the patient enters the room. Communicate any outliers or missing items to the Circulating RN in a timely manner. Use correct cleaning and disinfection methods for instruments, including disassembling loaner devices and preparing trays for decontamination. Assist with patient positioning and maintain correct anatomical alignment, using available positioning devices and padding. Maintain proper body mechanics during transport, moving, or lifting of the patient. Perform surgical counts according to hospital policy, ensuring accurate baseline and final counts of instruments, sponges, sharps, and radiopaque items. Dispense and manage radiopaque surgical soft goods, ensuring all are returned in their entirety and alert the Circulating RN if non‑radiopaque items are used. Assist with environment‑of‑care practices, including high‑low dusting, wiping surfaces, and cleaning OR cabinets. Follow hospital policy and AORN recommended practices for surgical attire, ensuring properly laundered garments and appropriate PPE are worn. Remove jewelry and restrict undergarments to prevent contamination of the sterile field. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology program. Zero to six months of experience.
