Asphalt Luteman
Full-Time | Paving Crew
Job Summary
We're looking for a hardworking Asphalt Luteman to join our paving crew. This is a hands-on, physically demanding role responsible for helping achieve a smooth, high-quality asphalt finish behind the paver.
Responsibilities
- Use a lute (asphalt rake) to spread, distribute, and smooth hot asphalt mix behind the paving machine
- Fill in low spots, joints, and irregular areas to ensure proper grade and thickness
- Work closely with the paver operator, screed operator, and rollers to maintain consistent mat quality
- Handle asphalt at high temperatures safely, following all PPE and heat-safety protocols
- Assist with hand-patching, edge work, and cleanup around utility structures, manholes, and curbs
- Communicate clearly with the crew to keep paving operations moving efficiently
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
- Follow all site safety procedures, traffic control plans, and DOT regulations as applicable
Requirements
- Previous experience on a paving/asphalt crew preferred, but willing to train the right candidate
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat
- Ability to lift 50+lbs repeatedly and stand/walk for long shifts
- Comfortable working near heavy equipment and hot materials
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to job sites
- Valid driver's license preferred
- Strong work ethic, team mentality, and attention to detail
Physical Demands
This role requires prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and working in hot outdoor conditions near heavy machinery.
Compensation & Schedule
- Competitive hourly pay, based on experience
- Overtime available during peak paving season
- Full-time seasonal or year-round positions depending on region
