Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Summary The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RMD appropriate to this position. This is a VA-wide initiative to provide a comprehensive and systematic approach to improve healthcare delivery at all stages of Veteran care. This entails moving from an episodic, "siloed" approach to an interdisciplinary, holistic approach, emphasizing self-care in the larger context of well-being. All staff in this facility will be part of this process, shifting the focus from the question, "What's the matter with you?" to the question, "What matters to you, and how can we help you live your best life?" This strategy also involves integrating a full range of conventional approaches with Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) approaches in order to optimize lifelong health and well-being, as defined by the Veteran, rather than narrowly focusing on disease management. The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) will perform all elements of sterilization, preparation, decontamination, high level disinfection (HLD), of Reusable Medical Device (RMD) and distribution support for the medical center. The incumbent will obtain knowledge of documentation and logging of information and use of the Censitrac tracking system. Major duties include, but are not limited to:
- Disassemble equipment, removes gross contamination from the component parts, reassemble equipment, and checks its functionality.
- Monitors expiration dates of endoscopes and pulls scopes expiring for reprocessing.
- Documents all items highly disinfected utilizing chemical disinfecting agents and checking and documenting efficacy of solution.
- Inspect instruments in the Preparation area, assemble trays and reprocess reusable medical device.
- Determines appropriate method for cleaning, decontamination, and sterilizing of equipment to prevent cross-infection potential while avoiding damage to equipment.
- Prepares loads, operates equipment involved in sterilization processes.
- Prepares operating room case carts and places any missing items on the OR shortage list.
- Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room.
- Pick-up and transport soiled RMD and deliver to Decon. The incumbent will deliver reprocessed RMD to the appropriate service.
- Must be knowledgeable of and adhere to all SPS policies/procedures/SOPs in performance of duties.

- Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

- Experience and/or Education
- Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
- Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
- Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
- English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
- Experienced SPS Tech familiar with Olympus Endoscopes, AERs, Steris washers and sterilizers.
- Experience in Dental equipment management and processing.
